As if we weren't already in love with Kelela's long-awaited debut Take Me Apart, the singer continues to woo us with a new set of visuals for breakup anthem "Frontline." We first heard the song during a crucial episode in the second season of HBO's Insecure. Although Lawrence and Issa's woes are still pretty fresh in our minds (hurry up Season 3!), Kelela has come through with some drama of her own for the animated visuals.
The story follows Kelela as she goes through a long-time-coming breakup. While she's cruising the highways and byways in her customized Mercedes convertible, she can't help but reflect on the relationship that just ended. But after a few tokes and a night out with her girls, she can finally leave former bae and her old life in the rearview mirror as she drives off into the sunrise of a new day.
Kelela partnered with her creative director Mischa Notcutt for the video's concept, then tapped Spanish digital/new media artist Claudia Matè for the animation and effects. She revealed her thought process to Rolling Stone, explaining, "With this Sims-like video, I was able to tell my story in a light-hearted but dramatic way. It's about leaving your ex with the wind in your hair while acknowledging a curiously complex feeling of pain that he has left you for a white woman."
So far, the videos from Take Me Apart – "LMK" and "Blue Light" – have each stood out in a major way and "Frontline" is no exception.
