Washington, D.C.'s annual celebration of all things melanated returns this weekend. The Black Love Experience, created by Nubian Hueman Boutique Lounge founder Anika Hobbs, is back for its fifth year on Saturday, March 17th. The event is one of the largest gatherings of Black artists and creatives in the D.C. area, showcasing everything from fashion, art, food and, of course, music. This year the event welcomes rapper Tabi Bonney, SoulBounce fave Aaron Abernathy, hip-hop artist Sa-Roc, African percussionist and consultant on Marvel's Black Panther Jabari Exum and sounds by DJ Underdog.
Inspired by the billion-dollar blockbuster film and cultural sensation Black Panther, The Black Love Experience's theme for 2018 is #PassportToWakanda. Expect to see the most Kente cloth and Ankara fabric outfits this side of the Atlantic and do the Wakanda salute throughout the night. While you're there, there's also the added value of supporting women-owned businesses and benefiting a local charity. "This anniversary is significant not only as a business owner, but also as a member of the Anacostia community," Hobbs said in a press release. "Nubian Hueman was one of the first businesses to open in the Anacostia Arts Center, and it continues to serve as a model and example of a sustainable business East of the River while building the global creative economy for people of color. And as [a] woman business owner, I am proud that we are celebrating our 5-year anniversary during Women’s History Month."
