Though we all rang in 2018 with celebration and hope for the coming year, the year so far has been pretty rough for some. Though times may be rough, we luckily have someone like Nigerian-American singer Joy Ike to provide us with inspiration. The Philly-bred songstress is prepping the release of her upcoming album, Bigger Than Your Box, and she's spreading a message with the set's hopeful new single "Hold On," which makes its debut today on SoulBounce.
The song, produced by Dave Brophy, finds Joy singing sweetly over a piano introduction as she paints a picture of the everyday struggles that we all face and reminds that holding on to hope is the only way to make it through. The pace of the song builds as drums and other instruments begin to layer for the chorus. Taking advantage of the moment, Joy takes what was a ballad and turns it into a pop anthem. "Come on, girl, hold on / You will find your song," she sings. "Come on, man, stay here / You are not your fears." Both the encouraging words and Joy's beautiful voice act as comfort and encouragement to move beyond your problems and step into your destiny.
“'Hold On' is dedicated to a few specific people in my life who have been sidetracked by unexpected illnesses and unwanted circumstances," Joy said about her latest single. "I wanted to write them a song that could embolden them and give them the courage and ammunition to make it to the other side of their setbacks. I hope this song gives people their second wind and reminds them that they're bigger than the box that tries to keep them contained.”
Joy Ike's Bigger Than Your Box is set to arrive in just over two weeks on April 6th and can be pre-ordered now via the singer's Bandcamp page.
