Mahalia Flips It & Reverses It In 'I Wish I Missed My Ex'

Our friends from across the pond have been making some major moves as of late. One such is singer Mahalia who has simultaneously released her latest single “I Wish I Missed My Ex” and its accompanying music video at the top of the month. The track’s title is a jarring yet relatable statement about the seesawing effect of trying to break from one’s past. On the song, Mahalia is kinda over her old bae, but he won't stop blowing up her phone. Over a warm, upbeat track she details his predictable weekend routine on the chorus, singing, “Every time the weekend comes, yeah/ I know that it won’t be long, yeah / Til you‘re gonna call my phone, yeah / You’ll be like 'Babe, come over.'” He wants closure, but little does he know that she's already moved on.

Mahalia keeps it moving in the visual as well. Directed by Andrew Litten, the clip was shot on location in the Highland Park area of Los Angeles and follows the singer around town but with a twist. The camera focuses on Mahalia going about her business, but everyone around her moves in reverse in an ode to The Pharcyde’s classic 1995 "Drop" visual. Mundane activities like walking down the street, perusing through a convenience store, going down a set of stairs or dancing at a house party appear quite comical with this visual treatment.

This unexpected take on “I Wish I Missed My Ex” is both creative and cute, and it endears us to the talent Brit even more. With all the new music that she's been dropping as of late, we hope that this means that a follow-up to her 2016 debut album Diary Of Me is in the works. We're definitely excited to see what else she has in store for the summer.
