When their sophomore effort Blood dropped earlier this year, Rhye returned with more of the smooth-yet-provocative sound that we couldn't get enough of from their debut Woman. The band has also kept up the consistent quality of their visuals. Though they rarely, if ever, feature any of the band's members, they manage to capture the essence of the songs in beautiful and exciting ways that are always thrilling to watch. Rhye does just that once again with their latest video for Blood's official second single, "Phoenix."
The song, which is about rebirth and embracing change, is steeped in the languid, dreamy sound we've come to expect from Rhye. The video also offers something we expected, as the clip focuses on a bevy of beautiful ladies who strike curious poses as the song wears on. However, the video's director Geneviève Medow Jenkins changes things up with an intriguing concept for the clip. The lovely models — who are draped in designer labels such as Versace, Gucci, Saint Laurent and others — are depicted doing mundane tasks in their couture. We see change coming in the form of a blonde woman in a black, fringed frock walking deliberately in their direction. Once she enters their abode, she proceeds to dance interpretively as she disrupts their glamorous existence and forces them to move and feel as the sun sets.
"The video for ‘Phoenix’ is a representation of the storms that are needed to instigate that change, renouncing the mundane," frontman Mike Milosh said of the clip. "Enough change best leads to communion with the natural world and the natural self. Change is a strong woman who comes into your life and shows you your true self. Hence, change is Phoenix."
In addition to dropping fashionable visuals, Rhye can be found on the road this summer as they embark on a slew of European tour dates, kicking off tonight with a performance at Manchester's O2 Ritz venue. Check out the group's full European itinerary after you watch the video for "Phoenix" below.
