SoulBounce Exclusive: LaToya Jane Keeps 'Everything' Real

Actress Tia Mowry was quoted as saying, "Having a second chance makes you want to work even harder." Those words ring true for LaToya Jane. The Toronto bred singer born LaToya Rodney always had a love for music growing up, but some twists and turns in her life led her down a destructive path that landed her in a women's correctional facility for 18 months. While she was incarcerated, her flame for music was reignited and she would write her own songs and perform them for the guards. Once out of prison, LaToya had the resolve to pursue her passions, which brings us to where we are today with the SoulBounce exclusive world premiere of her music video for her single "Everything."

"Everything" is taken from LaToya Jane's EP Grown, which was released in 2017. Produced by SoundsmithMusic and co-written by LaToya and Dwayne Morgan, the autobiographical song details her turning her wrongs into rights over a head nod-worthy sound bed of piano, guitar, bass and drums. In the first verse, she sings, "Humble on my way to success / I done seen everything / Open book life I confess / I done did everything / Been in these streets / Had to hustle for everything." Jane keeps it all the way real as she realizes that where she was wasn't where she was meant to stay despite what others had to say. "They said I had no chance / But they can't change God's plan," she sings, addressing the naysayers along her journey.

We see some of that journey in the 88EVERYTHING-directed music video for "Everything." We watch young LaToya with some of her school friends hanging out in Toronto and in a dance studio. "I chose the location to show a mix of the streets where I was raised and highlight some of the influences that I had to adapt to at a young age in my environment," LaToya tells us about the video's theme. We also see scenes of her in present-day walking in a tranquil forest to match her current outlook on life and freedom.
