City Winery Washington DC is the latest in a string of new concert venues to open in the Nation's Capital. It's also the newest addition to the City Winery franchise that now has six locations around the country in other major cities such as New York City, Chicago and Atlanta. Like its sister venues, City Winery Washington DC isn't just a concert space – there's an urban winery, restaurant and bar located inside the completely renovated site of Love (formerly known as Dream) mega-nightclub in Ivy City. This welcome addition to the neighborhood opened in April, and the first concert that Team SoulBounce was able to attend was to see Trina Broussard and Russell Taylor on Thursday, May 31st, which proved to be the perfect inaugural show for soul music lovers to get their fix.

On the evening of the concert, a hurricane-like torrential downpour on the way to the venue threatened to derail everyone's plans, but concertgoers swam their way there for the sold-out show. Patrons ate and drank from City Winery Washington DC's extensive menu while they were drying off and waiting for the show to start. (Pro tip: Order the macaroni and cheese – it is quite delicious.) Shortly after 8 p.m., it was finally showtime and Russell Taylor was up first to show everyone what he was capable of.

The one-time VH1 You Oughta Know artist showed why he received that accolade back in 2013. Concentrating his set on songs from his two most recent projects – 2017's Tin Man: The Blue and 2015's War Of Hearts – Taylor began with a track from the latter, "Proud." The melancholy song about lost love segued into the catchy number "War Of Hearts" about the push and pull of relationships. RT stayed in that love zone for "Dance With Somebody," his forlorn yet stunning remake of Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" from Tin Man: The Blue. Before singing his next song, "Come Home," also from that EP, Russell shared the big news that it would be featured on the upcoming new CBS drama Murder this fall. Taylor concluded his short but satisfying set on an upbeat note with the track "Hope" and left the audience in good spirits thanks to his captivating performance and charming personality.
