Masego Shares A Few Of His 'Favorite Tings'

In a world full of remakes of the same Christmas songs over and over again, Masego gives us something a little different. As usual. Available exclusively through Amazon Music, Masego blesses us with an upbeat rendition of “My Favorite Things” that will put some pep in your step throughout the cold winter season and beyond.

A Rodgers and Hammerstein show tune from The Sound of Music, “My Favorite Things” is a much beloved musical standard. Not explicitly related to the holiday season, the song became a Christmas staple after Julie Andrews sang it on The Garry Moore Show Christmas Special in 1965. The track gained an urban following after it became one of John Coltrane’s jazz standards. Vanessa Williams did a cover with Tony Bennett in 2001, Andre 3000 of OutKast put his spin on it as part of his The Love Below project in 2003 and Auntie Mary J. Blige even included the track on her 2013 A Mary Christmas album. Now Masego is giving the tune a trap jazz spin, redubbing it “Favorite Tings.”

At first, the track vaguely resembles the original. Masego has infused the "rump a pum pum" of the original with so much boom bap, including heavy drums, keys and bass guitar, it’s hard to hear it as the same composition. But, once Masego sings “Raindrops and whiskers on kittens…” it’s unmistakably the standard that many of us know by heart. For the video, Masego chooses to let us focus on the thump and rump-a-bum-bum of his production instead of any visual histrionics. Wearing a red velvet shirt, he leisurely makes his way across a crowded bar to the stage, saxophone by his side, and charms his audience into the Christmas spirit.

Speaking of favorite things, Masego should be featured on a few such lists this year. He released his debut album Lady Lady to critical acclaim and it hasn't left heavy rotation to be honest. In addition, he performed at sold out shows throughout the country on his recent tour to support the project. There’s no question that the multi-instrumentalist will continue to be a favorite in the new year. And, if the holiday season has you down, we think this gift from Masego will lift your spirits, or at least help you not feel so bad.
