The IRS Claims Aretha Franklin Owed Back Taxes Prior To Death

Aretha Franklin's business acumen, especially when it came to her shows, was one of the many memories that people shared about the late great Queen Of Soul after her death this past August. However, the IRS begs to differ. According to reports, the government agency clams that she owed $6.3 million in back taxes prior to her passing earlier this year. In addition to that, they also claim that Aretha owed 1.5 million in penalties. The lawyers for Aretha's estate denies the government's claim, however. "The IRS has filed its Proof of Claim in the ordinary course of the Estate proceeding," attorneys for the singer's estate told PEOPLE. "This is not a liquidated claim and it is disputed by the Estate. The vast majority of Ms. Franklin’s personal 1040 tax obligations were paid prior to her death – something she wished to occur. The Estate is diligently working to resolve any remaining issues." Seeing as the icon left behind a fortune estimated to be $80 million, we doubt there will be any problem with getting everything set with the government financially. #DontComeForTheQueen
