Our Eyes Are On Emeli Sandé's 'Sparrow'

We already knew that Emeli Sandé had been hard at work on her third LP, but things got real earlier this month when she released the lead single, "Sparrow." Like its feathered namesake, the song soars and touches us with its beauty. The effect is even more profound when paired with stunning new visuals directed by Sarah McColgan.

Describing the minimalist concept to ELLE magazine, Emeli reveals, "I loved Sarah's idea as soon as I saw it and I feel so proud of what we were all able to create together. Each woman in this video has their own unique strength and there was a real sense of sisterhood felt throughout the shoot." The clip doesn't follow a particular narrative, but it does tell a story. Women of various ethnicities are featured against a backdrop of vibrant florals and free-flowing fabrics, underscoring the song's themes of hope, solidarity and freedom. Backed by the powerful crescendo of a gospel choir, the final scenes are both breathtaking and penetrating as Emeli delivers heartfelt vocals on a snowy rooftop, surrounded by motionless women shrouded in red.

Ms. Sandé recently shared this powerful thought via social media, and we think it's a fitting way to close out Women's History Month, "Sparrows are always in flocks and do almost everything together. They're a symbol of strength and protection in numbers. A reminder that we're not alone and united we are powerful! Seek strength in each other."
