SB: Recognizing that selecting a favorite track is like picking a favorite child, do you have a favorite on the album?

S: [laughs] That’s a good question. Honestly, I don’t. I have a favorite track per day or per my mood, but there’s not an overall favorite track. Actually, this is my first album that I can listen to and not recognize it as my own stuff. My other albums, I’ll hear them once and not want to hear them again. But this one, I honestly forget! “Before Dark” came on Music Choice the other day, and it took me a few minutes to realize it was my song. [laughs] It’s fun and refreshing that I enjoy it as a listener.

SB: What artists you want to work with?

S: I think it would be fun to sing with Fantasia. I just love her. She makes me feel all the feels. She sings from the top of her head to the soles of feet, and I think it would be fun to dive into that vibe with somebody. I also love me some Sade. I really like Lucky Daye, and I think he’d be a fun person to collaborate with, especially since he’s a songwriter, too. Robert Glasper would be a good one, and to be on, say, Black Radio III would be so dope. Also, any Afrobeat or Afropop artists.

SB: What are you hoping fans take away from this album?

S: So much. It’s a love letter to myself, all aspects of myself. This album also allowed me to play around with different aspects of my voice that I hadn’t explored before, and I think that has to do with me being more comfortable in my skin and with who I am. And when I think about the “Full Lips” aspect. I think about my sexuality. I want people to be confident and comfortable with all aspects of themselves. “Wide Nose” is like symbolic to Black people, and I want us to remember that we are beautiful, strong, dynamic, resilient and vibrant.

SB: I see you are hitting the road in promotion of the new project, and I was happy to see that you will be at City Winery DC on September 24th. What can we expect from your live performances?

S: Performing is so much fun for me! It feels more at home than recording in a lot of ways to me. What’s so dope about live performances is that I’m literally co-creating with the band and the singers and even the audience. No two performances are ever the same, and the energy that the audience feeds me, I give it right back. It’s like creating magic every single time. I like to talk so you can expect me to give you a bit of background about myself. [laughs] Also, with my background in church, I like to make people sing! We’re gonna sing together. Overall, I hope people leave my shows with a little better understanding of who I am.

SB: We are definitely looking forward to seeing you on the road. What else is next for Such?

S: Definitely more videos and I will likely do more acting. Since you know the album, is there a song you would like to see a music video for?

SB: I would say “Don’t Matter What They Say” because it’s my favorite, and I can almost picture the visual for that. I would also say “Mood” because it's uptempo and very different from the rest of the songs on the album. Let’s see you get your two-step on! [laughs]

S: [laughs] OK, cool!

SB:  Here at SoulBounce, we pride ourselves at covering all the latest in soul music and putting folks on to newer, lesser-known artists. Who are you currently bouncing to? Who should we check out?

S: There’s a new guy I like named Alvin Garrett. He reminds me of The Isley Brothers but more contemporary. He has a very unique sounding voice and I just really, really like it.
