Emily King Shows Us There Are Different 'Sides' To Her Songs

Gone are the days when we have to wait years for an Emily King project. The singer-songwriter has been releasing new music faster than ever before, and we ain't mad. After dropping two albums in 2019 — GRAMMY-nominated Scenery and its remixed counterpart Change of Scenery — we honestly weren't expecting to hear from her this soon into the new year. But our girl is back with another must-have collection of songs called Sides.

The 11-track album features acoustic renditions of selected songs culled from a 10-year span of her catalog, including The Seven EP, The Switch and Scenery. We're accustomed to hearing Ms. King's gorgeous vocals against a backdrop of textured musical arrangements. Sides strips away the complex production and offers a more intimate experience accompanied by piano, guitar and strings.

The end results are exquisite, allowing fresh appreciation for old favorites like "Down," "Distance," "Can't Hold Me," "Look At Me Now" and title track "Sides." Still, Scenery track "Teach Me" is a lovely highlight amongst this set of standout songs. Here, it's transformed into a harmonious duet with Sara Bareilles that is nothing short of perfection.
