Following her performance at the TEDWomen 2020 conference last month, singer-songwriter Madison McFerrin has blessed her adoring fan base with a preview from her forthcoming debut album. Described as a “love letter to Bernie Sanders,” “Hindsight” is a beautifully reflective ballad that speaks to even those without politics or the state of the world on their minds. Having written the song in May of this year, she says, “I was filled with anxiety from COVID and the coming election, feeling let down by the Democratic Party, longing for a candidate that believed in climate change, student loan forgiveness and Medicare for All during a global pandemic.” The song’s refrain is particularly touching and speaks to her feeling as if the possibility of true progress had once again slipped away. She explains, “It’s a song about heartbreak — wishing you could change the past, knowing you have to continue forward regardless.”
Recorded as part of Mexican Summer’s Looking Glass series, an effort in which all proceeds from the digital singles on Bandcamp filter straight back to the artist or the charity of their choice, the accompanying visual features Madison belting out the track on a piano. As she played every instrument on the track except for the drums, the feature is fitting and her only companion in the room is drummer Louis Cato. The passion with which she conveys her message comes shining through and it's clear she misses the live stage. In fact, in a recent AfroPunk interview, she spoke for all of us when she noted “going to a live show and hugging my friends” among the first things she will do the minute the pandemic is over.
