As 2019 came to an end, Georgia Copeland and Nadia Latoya celebrated a new beginning as singing/songwriting duo MELONYX. But the good times came to an abrupt halt as the world shut down during a deadly pandemic. Thankfully, these British soul sisters didn't lose their shine during the unexpected hiatus. In fact, they've come through the other side with a new record deal (courtesy of Tru Thoughts) and a new EP entitled Black Elixir – celebrating the beauty, wisdom and resilience of Black women.
Produced by fellow Nottingham-based artist and producer Joe Buhdha, the project blends hip-hop, neo soul and lovers rock style of reggae. The appealing arrangements combined with the ladies' luscious harmonies creates a tantalizing brew. "I can tell I entice you, baby" the duo coos, mesmerizing our ears with their sweet, sticky soul on title track "Black Elixir." Their empowering, atmospheric anthem "Melanin Queens" extols the many virtues of our huetiful sisters, while "Ujjayi" reminds us of the importance of self-care. Another standout track, "You Make Me Feel Brand New'' celebrates freedom from bad relationships and a rediscovered sense of self-worth, all while cleverly interpolating The Sylistics' classic tune of the same name.
While their sound is undeniable, we're also impressed by the authenticity of the lyrics. This was intentional as MELONYX explains, "Black Elixir is our play on the theme of Black girl magic. Our perspectives as Black women and our desire to uplift our fellow Black girls was very much at the forefront of our minds.” Empowerment and grooves? We love to see it. Scroll down for a taste of Black Elixir, then visit your favorite DSP to experience it for yourself. Afterward, peep a live performance of "Energy" and keep up with the group via Twitter and IG.
