Battle of the Beats

Nas and SWV Battle it Out in the 'Human Nature' Sample Slam!

nas_illmatic.jpgswv_itsaboutitme.jpg

Welcome to another edition of "Battle of the Beats" in which we compare two songs that share some similarity or connection. Today, we have our first Sample Slam, between SWV's "Right Here (Remix) and Nas' "It Ain't Hard to Tell", which both sample MJ's classic "Human Nature" from the Thriller album.

This will also mark the first time we've put an R&B song and a rap song in the ring. Additionally, it may be worth noting that this battle isn't so much between Nas and SWV as it is Large Professor and Teddy Riley. So, let's remove ourselves from our undying adoration of the vocalists and try to focus on which producer flipped the sample the best.

Happy voting!

Nas: "It Ain't Hard to Tell"

SWV: "Right Here (Human Nature Remix)"

Both were the SHIZZNIT!!!!! but if I had to choose, I would pick nas

Both songs are classic. Nas killed it on the mic but there's nothing like Coko's vocals over a banging hip hop beat. I have to make a bias decision and pick my girls... SWV hands down.

I have to go wif the SWV sample, the extended version is extra dope cos it drops each instrument one by one before gettin into the song, I surprised noone has slowed down and remixed SWVs hook into It aint hard to tell - that'd be a phat collab!

SWV by far!!!! It was a very strange but successful sample and that phat beat started with them... alot of artists bit that drum loop after this joint was released! It aint hard to tell was the shit too

SWV .. it was sucha smooth fit.. how often can a whole sample fit a song with superspeeding it up or slowing it down..

It made me believe.. "Love is RIGHT HERE"

Man...two of my favorite songs of all time...but I'll have to go with SWV.

The Nasty Nas track made better usage of that MJ sample in my opinion. SWV's version (is dope, but) doesn't add anything extra to take it over the top!

I will vote.. large Professor on this one. The one leg up I give is that he really went at the track and tried to create a new beat. Teddy does get mad credit for kicking the track off HARD but Large Prof used the loop to emphasis the lyrics.

I'm gonna have to go with Nas on this one. The way they freaked that sample is ridiculous.

I'm gonna have to go with SWV, although I love me some Illmatic.

Ooo, do DeBarge "Stay With Me," next!

I must say Teddy killed it on the beginning of that track, but my best song is definitely the Nas joint.
