Battle of the Beats
Who's Really "Golden"? Chrisette Michele Or Jill Scott?
It's been a hot minute since we've done a Battle of the Beats, so this week we're bringing it back and not coming wack with a neo-soul diva showdown. In this corner we have newcomer Chrisette Michele and in the other corner we have Jill Scott, and we're putting their songs entitled "Golden" up against each other. I know, it's so wrong, it's right. Jill Scott's "Golden" was the lead single to her album Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 and became an upbeat anthem for living your best life (as Oprah would say). The chorus was catchy and the phrase "living my life like it's golden" found its way into everyone's lexicon. On the flip side, Chrisette's "Golden" is an album cut that hasn't penetrated the culture like Jill's song, but it needs to. This ode to the bygone days of real love and committed relationships is a lush, absolutely gorgeous ballad. If Def Jam has any sense they will release this as a single and give this sista's debut disc the push that it needs, but I digress.
Personally, I love both songs for different reasons, so this is a tough choice for me. But I'm gonna have to give my girl Jilly the edge. Who doesn't want to live their life like it's golden? Is this gonna be a landslide victory for Jill or does young Chrisette have any chance whatsoever at a vote or two? Have a listen and then have your say in the comments section.

Gotta go with Chrisette Michele. That song just hits me at the core every time I hear it. Definitely will be the song I walk down the aisle to when I get married.
Karen | June 5, 2008 5:43 PM | PermalinkWow this is really a hard one because I have been a Jill Scott Fan forever and I love her voice, style music so much especially Live she can kill it Live her vocal range is amazing, her alibs are amazing she can make anything sound good. As far as Chrisette Michele Love her! not only is her voice unique in this age in time but she is beautiful and her lyrics are beautiful also she is deffinately talented with her vocals and playing the piano...so on this one I have to go with........JILL SCOTT im sorry but she is original, Chrisette reminds me too much of Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie cole in one and its not original but i still love her voice and will support her on all her albums and go to her concerts.
Lisa | May 31, 2008 6:16 PM | PermalinkJill and Chrisetts both EMBODY what music should be knowadays... This battle is not pitted the artists against each other...It is pitting the songs.....I would have to give this one to Michelle. The song is beautifully written, sang, performed.....I still live Jill though.
Adebowale Asaya | May 25, 2008 10:09 PM | PermalinkThe are both truly talented,a nd gifted artist. I have had the oppertunity to hear them both. Even though i am a huge Jill S fan. But still I can't quite get the comparisons, their styles are a little different.
T Morris | April 19, 2008 3:10 PM | PermalinkChrisette takes it for me...Something new and fresh with an old school message. Jilly from Philly has has done it yet again. Giving us a tune that keeps on playing in everyones heads.
Pamue | March 4, 2008 5:42 AM | PermalinkI have to go with Chrisette Michele's 'Golden.' It is my favorite song on her album.

jennifer | December 18, 2007 8:11 PM | PermalinkI've been a hugh Jill Scott fan since day one, but Chrisette did the damn thing on this one. I gotta go for Chrisette. She's young but the song is so "Grown and Sexy!"
PURFEK | November 21, 2007 7:51 AM | PermalinkUm...why am I spending more time voting for this than I did in the 2004 elections?!! Damn... I'm gonna have to go with Jill for her body of work. But this particular battle of songs...Chrissette wins, because if it were nearly as overplayed as Jill's Golden, who knows which way I'd sway...
brighstarr | November 19, 2007 2:51 PM | PermalinkDefenitely Chrisette Michele.

CreoleInDC | October 23, 2007 10:05 PM | PermalinkNow this is a battle. I have to say that I'm surprised that Chrisette is doing as well as she is.
I never realized you were such a trouble starter Budda...LOL! :)
Trouble is my middle name. OK, maybe it's Antoinette but I understand that's trouble in Swahili. LOL
Butta | October 23, 2007 2:40 PM | PermalinkChrisette is definitely dope and what's new and fresh at the moment, but soul music would not be as entertaining without Jilly around and songs like 'Golden!' I give the edge to Jill Scott for that reason and that her latest release is best thing since sliced deli meat...
I never realized you were such a trouble starter Budda...LOL! :)
SoundNexx | October 23, 2007 2:31 PM | PermalinkProps to Chrisette for penning what could be the biggest wedding song of the next 10 years but Jill's joint is an anthem.
Being much more of a realist and not much on flowery romanticism I personally aspire to the sentiments in Jill's joint, even when I consistently fall short.
More importantly for me, the musical arrangement on Jill's joint just kills. The chord progression hits me each time the same as when I first heard the tune, when I pretty much left it on repeat all day long.
DJStylus | October 23, 2007 1:42 PM | PermalinkAwww - Chrisette's Golden was the song I walked down the aisle too just less than 2 months ago and people were like WHAT SONG IS that it was beatuiful...therefore my vote is Chrisette 100% - I mean really the lyrics are ridiculous!!!!
Law Diva 1908 | October 23, 2007 11:17 AM | PermalinkI have to go with my girl Jill!! Nuff said.
Sheree | October 23, 2007 10:12 AM | PermalinkI'm a sucker for love and romance but a woman who knows what she wants...Miss Chrisette Michelle has a beautiful voice and her CD didnt get the publicity it needed and deserved. Although, I love Jilly...but right now I'm in this metaphoric stage in my life where I can relate to Chrisette's Golden!! My star goes for Chrisette!!
Empress | October 23, 2007 9:51 AM | PermalinkLove Jill but gotta go with Chrisette cuz I'm so ready to love and looking for those olden days when commitment was golden.
have both CD and love them both.
Toni | October 23, 2007 7:38 AM | PermalinkChrisette all the way!
I never really liked Jill's "Golden" song.
rkj | October 23, 2007 4:02 AM | PermalinkGotta go with Jill. Miss Michele is one of my top favs for the year but Jill's "Golden" gets the crown.
KB | October 23, 2007 12:02 AM | Permalink***like the olden days when commitment was golden***---ok miss chrisette!

tanyetta | October 23, 2007 12:01 AM | PermalinkOk.. Jilly from Philly still wins BUT... Chrisette has gained some serious spins
Belve | October 22, 2007 11:12 PM | PermalinkI am rolling with Chrisette Michele.. I can not stop playing her cd. I never was all that much on Jill.
Abraham B. | October 22, 2007 10:29 PM | PermalinkButta bout to get stabbed. Pernt blank. Humph.
SIP | October 22, 2007 10:19 PM | PermalinkHehehe. I take ALL the blame. Whew lawdy! It's a tough one because they are both saying SOMETHING. I can't wait to see the comments on this. I'm personally going to go against the grain and go with my girl Chrisette. I mean that song just makes you...feel. And for such a young whipper snapper to be sanging...not singing...about going back to the days when love was Golden. What she know bout that? Obviously something!
Total Package | October 22, 2007 10:18 PM | Permalinkooooh this is so deliciously wrong butta..but i shall take part none the less...im gonna have to side with jill..i LOVE both song for completely different reasons, because they are 2 different songs with 2 different meanings with only 1 common ground..POSITIVITY...golden life and golden love...but Jill is Jill..how cant u side with her?
