Diggin' in the Crates

Rahsaan Patterson Didn't Mean To 'Rock Ya Baby'

rahsaan_patterson_red_crop.jpg

So last week while I was on a much-needed vacation (and getting some shade both under a palm tree and over here from the HNIC...smooches!), our illustrious Head Bouncer dug all up in and through the crates for five straight days of hotness.

Well, not to be outdone and piggy-backing on yesterday's Rahsaan Patterson factoids, I felt the need to post this banger from Mr. Patterson for today's DITC selection. I didn't have to dig too far for this one, since the song was released in '06, but I just heard it recently and I suspect that I'm not alone in missing out. This is the original version of "Rock Ya Baby," a track that I came across on his Taste EP, but an alternative version is floating around by Aussie turntablist DJ Peril featuring a few bars by MC Surreal. I've heard both and this one kicks the others bootay Ali-Frazier style.

But enough long talking from me, prepare to shake a tailfeather, folks.

SoulBounce Chats With Franklin Bridge

franklin_bridge_yellow.jpg

If you've been visiting SoulBounce for any length of time, then you should already be familiar with the band Franklin Bridge, who we featured as Bounce-Worthy artists last fall. We closely followed their tenure on the FOX reality show, The Next Great American Band, and were shaking our Team Franklin Bridge pom-pons weekly until their way too soon and extremely suspect exit from the series. But one failed reality competition isn't stopping this talented band's show, and their beat still goes on.

"Lil" Darrell Robinson, Rayfield "Ray Ray" Holloman, Curt Chambers and Wayne Moore (pictured in order above) are more than just guys who gig together every now and then. These men have formed a tight-knit musical family, and 2008 will find them playing more live shows, writing more music and hopefully completing their debut album.

I had a chance to hang out with Franklin Bridge when they played at the 930 Club in Washington, D.C. in December, and we chopped it up about the Philly music scene, their plans for the future, and, of course, that show. And, ladies, listen closely to find out which one of the fellas is single and looking to mingle. With their upcoming concert this Saturday, February 2nd at The Black Cat in D.C., it may be someone's lucky night. Get your stilettos ready!

In Anticipation of That New Dwele

Singer, songwriter, rapper, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Dwele should be releasing a new album on Koch this spring, as in, he's been working on some things. Details bandied about in his interview with the Detroit Free Press are as follows:

  • The release could include a bonus DVD of live performances.
  • The first single is "I'm Cheating" produced by G-One.
  • No official album title as of yet.
  • The vibe follows the spirit of his other releases but will be seasoned with different sounds and guest producers.

We Hear

Jay-Z / Mary J. Blige Album in the Works?

jay-z-mary-j-blige.jpgAHH rumors: "I know how true this is, but the source is pretty good! I heard that Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z might be in talks to do an album. Basically, this is a concept album in the same spirit as Jay-Z's Best of Both Worlds with R. Kelly. Mary and Jay have worked together in the past for years and years. I think it could be a good deal."

Indeed! If there's an ounce of truth to this I'll be the first one in line (i.e. hitting the itunes pre-order button) to grab this joint. Mary and Jigga have been teasing us ever since "Can't Knock the Hustle" with interludes, drops and unreleased tracks like "Rock Steady" and "Turn Off the Lights" for years. This is what should've happened instead of Best of Both Worlds and I'm surprised he hasn't decided to cash in with a more obvious choice of a full-length album with his ladylove Beyonce.

So what producers would make this team-up really pop? 9th Wonder? Diddy and his Hitmen? Kanye West? We're watching this one closely.

What Can We Expect Now That Harve 'Joe Hooker' Pierre is President of Bad Boy?

jay-harve-diddy.jpg

That's the burning question, at least in my mind. Harve Pierre has done everything at Bad Boy since probably about, oh, let's say, since Jesus was a boy. According to a widely circulated press release, "as President, he will oversee the finance, creative, promotional, marketing, A&R, International, and Sales divisions at the label." I honestly didn't think there was anything left for him to do. During his time at the label, he's performed in capacities both creative and business. Associate Executive producer credit on a host of Bad Boy albums, classic hooks on tracks by Black Rob and G.Dep, vocal production for Carl Thomas and others, and some notable appearances on Making the Band. In the following exclusive audio obtained by SoulBounce, Harve Pierre gives us an in-depth look at his forthcoming approach for his tenure as Bad Boy President.

He sounds pretty serious.

Leona Lewis Premieres Unnecessary New Video

After topping the charts in her native UK, Leona Lewis is prepping for a US blitz this spring. To that end, she shot a new video for the first single "Bleeding Love" that premiered Tuesday online. But you may say to yourself, doesn't she already have a video for "Bleeding Love" out? Why, yes, she does. But lest you get it twisted, that was the UK version, and this waste of time and money is the US version. I'm sorry, but even with its New York City setting, this video is about as exciting as stripping wallpaper. I literally fell asleep with my eyes open while watching this. This clip added nothing to the song and didn't improve upon the original whatsoever. At least she's pleasant to look at and listen to.

Erykah Badu Has 'Nuff Tings In Store For Her Fans

erykah_badu_fence.jpg
As a recent participant in the Barbados Jazz Festival, Erykah Badu's revealed some interesting developments she has in store to a Jamaican newspaper. First off, Erykah has plans to launch a magazine, Freaq, an obvious nod to her Control FreaQ record label. Aside from the eagerly anticipated New AmErykah album that's set to be released on her birthday of February 26th, Erykah also has plans for two other albums. Return of the Ankh is slated for a July release, and New AmErykah II which Erykah plans to be released via USB sticks that allow fans to have access to new material as soon as it's released. This last development gives more meaning to her claim that she is truly an "analog girl in a digital world." Additionally, you stans out there will be happy to know that she manages her own MySpace page, instead of it being managed by someone else not worthy of your digital love and adulation. It's great to hear that this will be a prolific year for Ms. Badu, after way too long of a hiatus.

The Fabulous Chico DeBarge of 1986

Today's Video SoulBounce was going to highlight Jay-Z's "Pray", but there's probably nothing we can add to that and this is so much more fun.

Look into Chico's eyes. What is he thinking?

A far cry from the bald, post-prisonal "No Guarantees" Chico DeBarge, this one from back in the day was EIGHTIES DOWN! I have no idea what I was doing back then, but "Talk to Me" so wasn't on my radar. It was, however, a Top 10 R&B hit back then so dude was on a path before those pesky drug charges. There's a real video for this and we'll be your best friend if you find it for us. In the meantime, we have the album cover and some squiggly Youtube effects.

So what do you think of the haircut and navel-baring top? We think it's rather fierce.

BlogBeat, I Was There

Madness and Chicanery Unfold at the Sharon Jones Show!

1201717602_sharonjones.jpg"Vivrant Thang", one of our Official Bouncers, has penned a thrilling, eye-opening account of her experience at the recent Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings concert here in DC. As a summary, the very "diverse" crowd couldn't handle their liquor and the act herself had to intervene more than once. Thing is, this isn't metal. It's Sharon Jones! 'Bows were thrown and Bonecrusher wasn't even in the house!

They were "dancing" wildly and roughly bumping into me hard so that I was being pushed into the person next to me...while I was holding my precious camera. Remember, I'm a lover not a fighter so I tried several approaches before I completely lost it and and pushed back...hard. They were too drunk to really notice.

Sharon Jones to the rescue!

And it gets worse, or better if you're running a music blog called SoulBounce and find these things to be entertaining fodder on a slow news day (sorry, Viv!). Also, our lovely bouncer has posted a nice collection of Youtube clips from the performance. I'm so jealous. Or maybe not, because I woulda shot somebody if I'd been there.

So You Think You Know Rahsaan Patterson?

rahsaanp.jpgDear SoulBounce reader,

I submit to you some fun facts about an artist that many of you may be aware of.

  1. He's from The Bronx
  2. He was on Kids Incorporated.
  3. Two songs (including the one below) from his new album Wines and Spirits will be featured in theatrical releases this year.
After reading the comments from this article it dawned on me how it's sort of sad how so many aren't hip to him yet. Here's to Rahsaan getting his propers in the '08.
