Name That Beat
Name That Beat: Like Jeopardy For DJ's
DJ Stylus again gets credit for winning the last installment of NTB. However, he only gets 5 out of a possible 10 points for guessing half of last week's sample correctly. The complete answer is Kevin Barron's "Sunset" which was used by DJ Spinna on his remix of De La Soul's "Stakes Is High."
This week's sample is below. This track easily has THREE samples that are pretty identifiable once you listen to it completely. Therefore, for a week's worth of bragging rights, you must name at least TWO of these tracks with the artists who made them. This is of course in addition to naming the artist and title of the original track.
Ready? Set?
Go!

Hmmm... No one mentioned the obvious "Run's House".

My bad. Now that I reconfirm my sources, "Manifest" is from "Night in Tunisia." It's funny how the horn intro to "Ashley's Roachclip" and the horns from "Manifest"/"Night In Tunisia" sound so similar.
Ill Mami | January 11, 2008 9:31 AM | PermalinkI thought Paid in Full but I went back to it cause I was stuck on it being Bobbi Humphrey (Curses to my bad work speakers) but I couldn't place the Manifest to save my life.
Belve | January 11, 2008 3:27 AM | PermalinkI don't know Ill Mami... when I think of "Manifest" the first thing that comes to mind is "Night in Tunisia". I figured once they got "Paid In Full" that was the most obvious joint.
@ nOva... I tried to sit on the bench for a while. DC pride got to me.
DJStylus | January 10, 2008 11:43 PM | PermalinkI'm still confused as to why no one claimed "Manifest" by Gangstarr
Ill Mami | January 10, 2008 1:20 AM | Permalinkas a song that was spawned by this original. I thought it was the easiest to recognize.
@ ill Mami
You might as well just start emailing these directly to Stylus, lol.
nOvaMatic | January 10, 2008 12:44 AM | PermalinkCrap.. I didn't check back far enough. I keep thinking that drum solo sounded too familiar. And a little too "professional" for Bobbi Humphrey's crew.
Hats off to DJStylus.
Belve | January 9, 2008 7:15 PM | PermalinkLeave it to me to miss the obvious on a drum solo.
See, this is what I get for being late to the party.
The one and only Chuck Brown with his crew The Soul Searchers. This tune is called "Ashley's Roachclip."
DC STAND UP!!!!
Gotta represent for the 3 stars and 2 bars.
Mad folks have touched this... LL Cool J (Jack The Ripper), Nice & Smooth (Down the Line), even PM Dawn (you guess)
And to think that I was gonna retire from this for a while.
DJStylus | January 9, 2008 1:42 AM | Permalinkyay! i'm trying to come up with something else...
Jennifer | January 9, 2008 12:22 AM | Permalink@ Jennifer

I'm totally surprised Stylus wasn't all over this one...lol
Ill Mami | January 8, 2008 11:48 PM | Permalinkhmmm...erik b and rakim, "paid in full??"

Jennifer | January 8, 2008 10:41 PM | Permalinkok, can't say i didn't try:)
thanks!
Jennifer | January 8, 2008 10:40 PM | Permalink@ Jennifer
Nope, it's not Bobbi Humphrey. And if you want clues (a first ever in NTB history), listen to the opening horns and the drum beat at 3:34, nicely pointed out by Belve.
Ill Mami | January 8, 2008 10:18 PM | PermalinkIll Mami: help us out...is it bobbi humphrey???
jennifer | January 8, 2008 9:31 PM | Permalink@ Belve
Sorry to tell you that Bobby Humphrey's "Jasper County Man" is not the title of this sample.
Keep digging!
Ill Mami | January 8, 2008 9:08 PM | PermalinkJennifer.. Trust your instincts, always.
Bobbi Humphrey - Jasper County Man
the 1st is easy..
1. Ice T - Original Gangster
the 2nd
Digable Planets - Blowing Down
cost me 3 hours of cd scanning
But that drum solo @ 3:34 sounds like I have heard it everywhere.
Belve | January 8, 2008 8:10 PM | PermalinkThis is a tough one...correct me if i'm wrong but it sounds like bobbi humphrey on the flute??? donald byrd beat maybe?? shoot, i'm @ a loss!! i give up!
