To Be Young, Gifted And Black

black_history_frank_morrison.jpg

With February 2008 coming to an end, we'd like to suggest that people celebrate Black History every day, not only for one month out of the year. Enjoy these tunes--one to soothe and the other to make you groove--from two of our soul music icons.

Brutal And Brilliant: The Roots' '75 Bars' Video

The new videos just keep coming! And "75 Bars (Black's Reconstruction)" by The Roots deserves some shine all its own. After viewing this one you'll make sure not to get on the bad side of Black Thought, ?uestlove and Tuba Gooding, Jr., lest you catch a Philly-style beat down. There's no indication what the poor schmuck who Thought et al are roughing up did to deserve such treatment, but I imagine him to be a record label executive. Hey, a sista can dream can't she?

What? No Wedding Gown?

Gnarls Barkley's new clip for "Run", while certainly frenetic and psychedelic, is uncharacteristically basic. As in, the artists aren't portrayed by sock puppets. The ever engaging and so not completely irritating and corny Justin Timberlake plays host on a retro-futuristic American Bandstand/Soul Train show and the happy couple performs to the coked-out crowd with a mixture of gospeldelic fervor and stony indifference.

This is CRAZY FRESH! (?)

Will.I.Am And Team Obama: 'We Are The Ones'

With two hotly contested Democratic primaries upcoming in Texas and Ohio, Will.I.Am is back with another viral video complete with more of his Barack Obama-supporting friends. Although not as jazzy as "Yes We Can" (or the remix that makes us want "Barack our bodies"), "We Are the Ones" unites a gang of actors and musicians for a  pointed message to Latinos and undecided voters. There's more talking than singing in this video but it's great to hear Zoe Kravitz (!), N'Dambi, Tyrese, and Macy Gray on the chorus.

New Videos From Everybody And Their Grandma

No, "Everybody and Their Grandma" isn't the name of the latest hot new group to hit the scene (although that would be a pretty tight name), but if I were to list all the artists who've released new videos lately we'd be here for a minute or fifteen. So here's the roundup of whose videos are on blast this week at SBHQ: Jay-Z, Pete Rock and Redman, Mariah Carey, LMNO and Kev Brown, and NYOIL.

Algebra's Next Release: Break The Dead Heat!

algebra_chalkboard_crop.jpg

According to our latest Soul-Poll, it looks as if folks are really feeling both songs up for Algebra's next single. So much so that they are in a statistical dead heat (sorry, too much CNN lately), with "Halfway" holding a slight lead over "Run and Hide." But there's still time to cast your vote and let your voice be heard. Click here to listen to both tracks and have your say.

Also, for everyone who has been searching high and low for Algebra's CD, I've gotten word from her people that they are working on improving distribution. But in the meantime, Purpose can be found on iTunes, at Circuit City stores, and online at Amazon and Buy.com. If you've found it somewhere else, please leave the 411 behind in the comments.

'Black Magic' Soundtrack is Music for the Soul

Black Magic Sdtk small.jpgOn March 16 and 17, ESPN, in collaboration with Shoot the Moon Productions and filmmaker Dan Klores, will air Black Magic, a documentary chronicling the injustice black players and coaches from Historically Black Colleges and Universities had to endure during the civil rights era. The four hour program will be broken up in two parts, focusing on the struggles of Historically Black Colleges and Universities back in the 1960s.

Just as importantly, on March 11th, Rhino/Warner Music Group will release the soundtrack to the doc, filled to the brim of yo' daddy's flapjack cap with some of the baddest soul music of the era. With tracks from Earth, Wind & Fire, Graham Central Station, Booker T. & the MG's, The Bar-Kays and Tower of Power all rolled into one package, the disc will probably have you putting up a fist and fighting the powers-that-be.

Kudos to the Worldwide Leader for airing the film (even if it's not during Black History Month), and to Rhino for the hits. Check the full soundtrack lineup here.

Things That Don't Need to Happen, Vol. 58

Perez Hilton
may soon be doodling all over the recording industry in the same manner as his highly-trafficked celebrity gossip site. The rumor posted this week in the New York Times has Perez (slave name: Mario Lavandeira) possibly assuming a position at Warner that will enable him to act as an all-supreme talent broker.

Mr. Lavandeira has been negotiating a deal that would provide him with his own imprint at Warner Brothers Records, a division of the music giant Warner Music Group, he said. This was confirmed by several other people associated with the talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because no deal has been made. The talks are preliminary, and an agreement is not certain, but Mr. Lavandeira could receive $100,000 a year as an advance against 50 percent of any profits generated by artists he discovers and releases through Warner Brothers, these people said.
Perez Hilton is a "Tastemaker of The Future". You know, the future that was prophecized in the Bible, complete with war, conquest, pestilence, death and people screaming "First!"

Soul Fashioned, We Hear

Fashion Bomb

kanye-shady.jpg

Can a brother get in? Fashion-obsessed Kanye West, who once deemed these entertaining Balenciaga "Closed Front Cage Sandals With Ankle Pads" as "the illest", was denied entry to a recent Balenciaga show. The Balenciaga folks say Kanye never made the request. Kanye has suspicions that point to, well, his ego: "We didn't get a ticket for Balenciaga. I understand it, I get a lot of attention and, you know, sometimes the designers don't want anything taking the focus off the show." Right, I couldn't imagine how all the other celebrities usually in attendance at fashion shows would be able to concentrate with Kanye in the house. He was, however, admitted into the Viktor & Rowf show. [NYT]

The Dead Prez Riot Finally Allowed a Context

The Hip Hop Congress will raise money to pay the Thurston County police for the damages caused during a riot at the dead prez concert two weeks ago. The HHC are some real stand up guys. They will also hold a forum tomorrow discussing the events that prompted the uprising and attempt to spark some community dialog. Raise your hand if you saw this coming. [HHDX / XXL]

Rakim: 'It's Nothing' / 'Hip Hop'

rakim-archive.jpg

Rakim ("The God") is set to release The Archive: Live, Lost & Found on Koch/Fast Life next month. The collection will include live recordings (the Clark Kent-produced "Guess Who's Back" is a modern Rakim favorite, if you consider the late-'90s "modern") and some unreleased material. During the course of his non-deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath, he appeared on Jay-Z's "The Watcher 2" (a sequel to Dre's own from his 2001 album), "Contagious" with Truth Hurts, and most recently on "Better Than I've Ever Been" with Nas, Kanye, and KRS-One. The Archive will, presumably, be followed later this year by The Seventh Seal. [2DB / HHDX]

Diggin' In The Crates: 'Bustin' Loose' Soundtrack

bustin_loose.jpg
As I was watching Bustin' Loose, featuring Cicely Tyson and Richard Pryor as they transport a rag-tag bunch of troubled kids to a farm from Philadelphia to Washington State, last night on cable, two things dawned on me:

  1. This movie is not as great as I once thought it was when I was a child
  2. I was only really watching the movie to catch clips from the great soundtrack
This soundtrack can essentially be classified with the rest of Roberta Flack's discography, since she is the sole artist featured on all of the tracks. This album, which is out of print and not available on CD, is rare gem for those who can find it. I was luckily able to find the track below which features a very familiar voice and frequent one-time Flack collaborator early in his career.

Trivia question: Why was production was halted on Bustin' Loose for several weeks?

Kenna & the Neps on Letterman

Pharrell put down his expensive Louis Vuitton jewelry long enough to pick up some drumsticks and perform with Kenna on Letterman last night. The Ethiopian-born artist performed "Say Goodbye to Love" which has been out for a minute. Make Sure They See My Face is a pretty solid album (if you're into that; if not, we encourage you to expand) and is largely produced by Chad Hugo, who you can see here on the keys. Here's to hopefully seeing Kenna on N3RD.

Janet to Score #1 With 'Discipline'

janet-suit.jpgAccording to Hits Daily Double, Janet Jackson's Discipline will enter the charts at #1 next week with Erykah Badu's New AmErykah following at #2. Janet's tenth studio release is expected to move somewhere around 180,000 units by the time the official numbers are released. Badu provided healthy competition this week with a stellar album that's garnering mostly positive reviews. Janet, on the other hand, seems to have a higher hill to climb critically.

Entertainment Weekly's Margeaux Watson:
"If you thought the 41-year-old Jackson, not unlike Madonna and Prince, would drop the nympho shtick and embrace more age-appropriate songwriting and production instead of competing with the Beyoncés and Rihannas of today...you'd be wrong."
