'Southern' Roots

Sure, the song "Southern Girl" appeared on Rahzel's (of The Roots) 1999 effort Make the Music 2000. However, anyone who's heard the joint knows that it has Erykah Badu's fingerprints all over it. In fact, I'll go ahead and say it: This track right here is E-Boogie's declarative statement.

Proclaiming the city of Dallas as the "home of the pocket stones/home of the booty songs", Badu growls over Rah's ferocious beat box, spelling out (literally, i.e., "Big D, Lil' A, Double L.A.S.") her city's M.O. Did you know that Big D was also home to "finger waves that last," gold teeth, dominoes and a "two piece and a pepper"? Thanks to Erykah, you do now.

However, the defining moment in the song, the part where Ms. Badu gets down to business, is with the following flow:

Southern Girl, and I'll rock your world
Fly as a bumble bee (Buzz)
Can't nobody f*** with me
I'm a Southern Girl
From way down South
Got a dirty way
'Cause I got a dirty mouth, dirty South

That, right there, was Erykah's version of dropping the mic and walking off stage. Taking Rahzel's song with her.
