The Roots' Fans Are Even More Split Over 'Birthday Girl'
Since the lead single "Birthday Girl" for The Roots' tenth album Rising Down premiered on the internet four days ago, their fans have chosen sides. In short, some hate it, and some think it's great that the band has chosen to think outside of the "hip hop box." As one of their fans who was fully prepared to launch Side-Eye 2.0 © after hearing "Birthday Girl" featuring Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, this video now has both of my eyes twitching so hard, I can barely write this post. All I going to say is that the video involves (surprise) a teenager's birthday party, lots of dancing, lots of (presumed) cocaine, the birthday girl making out with her female cohort, and the mother of the "birthday girl" making out with a rather young underaged boy. Does anyone have Questlove's number? I feel like someone has some serious explaining to do.[H/T: AHM]

I can understand if you guys don't like the song cus its definitely not typical roots style but I think you're completely missing the point on the video. al got it right this is a commentary on and basically a mock of rich white suburban girls and how they've been influenced by MTV shows like My Super Sweet 16 and all the other bullshit this culture is pushin out and wat its doin to these kids

tw3nty | March 17, 2008 1:54 PM | Permalinkill mami: Cloverfield wasn't bad, it just got bad press. This vid is seething, if you ain't been to any of the white kid college parties or suburban house parties you might not get this. I almost take this as a diss to their core demographic. The white kids that actually pay to go to shows and buy their albums. I thought it was wack when I first heard the track, but seeing the video it's a different story for me. I don't like the song, but I get the point.

ill Mami | March 16, 2008 1:27 PM | PermalinkOh wait, you mean to tell me this isn't the first three minutes of Cloverfield?
nOvaMatic | March 15, 2008 7:45 PM | PermalinkI don't this is outside the "hip hop box" I didn't want to look at it because I heard about.I don't know what is going on.I just wonder why can't some accept hip-hop for what it is.Some things I wouldn't consider hip-hop it's just music.I don't know I can yap on and on lol.But Roots, 50/50 right now.The last album I heard from them was Phrenology.
Sharonda | March 15, 2008 9:40 AM | PermalinkUgh. No. Just...no. Fall Out Boy, wack lyrics, wack-ass $2 video, and what's that, Dracula Sambo as the cover art? I love The Roots but I'm giving them the serious side eye right now.
