Video: Ne-Yo 'Closer'
When someone like Ne-Yo says he's bored with urban music and wants to shake things up, I get a little worried. In the short time he's been out, he's established himself as Urban Pop royalty, volleying between penning solid R&B/Soul tracks for Mary J. Blige and Musiq Soulchild, and Pop hits for Rihanna, Beyonce and Janet Jackson. Taking things to the next level, in this respect, can only mean one thing: House music. The video for "Closer", the first single from Year of the Gentleman, premiered late last week, and I must say I'm digging the vibe. The clip is slick and energetic, heavy on the Timberlake-isms, but entirely appropriate for a track that is equal parts late-night creep and dancefloor sweat. In spite of his unrelenting ubiquity, Ne-Yo seems to be pushing things forward. The real test will be in convincing Keisha and Quita to come along for the ride.

Meh! Not impressed at all. Not shaking anything up. Maybe for him it's a big deal. Too much MJ. Get your won style Ne-Yo.

Mr. Lowe | April 28, 2008 5:18 PM | PermalinkThis ain't "shaking" a damn thing up. Great video. Subpar sound. As far as the house reference, the song is the equivalent to tofu - an iffy approximation that makes you crave for the real thing.
