Looking Back

Wrapping This Week's Soul Candy

wrapup0531.jpg

FEEDBACK OF THE WEEK: In order to elevate the discourse around here, we decided to highlight some of the best and worst comments over the past week by awarding them. The Gold Star Award will go to comments that are insanely funny, intelligent or do much to drive the thread forward.

We didn't have any of those this week.

Top 100 Soul/R&B Songs

#56: Lenny Williams 'Cause I Love You'

lenny_williams_spark_of_love.jpgAs lead singer of the group Tower of Power, Lenny Williams enjoyed a sprinkling of hits during his tenure with the funk outfit. But it wasn't until he returned to his solo career in the mid-'70s that his star really shined, and one of his stellar moments on wax was the soaring ballad "Cause I Love You." Clocking in at over seven minutes long, this song is as dramatic as an episode of The Young & the Restless. Between Lenny's soulful wails and his heartfelt monologue where he let it be known that he wasn't afraid to cry for the love that he lost, "Cause I Love You" is nothing short of a classic. Kanye West revisited the track when he sampled it for Twista's "Overnight Celebrity" in 2004, almost 30 years after the song's release. The sample was good, but it barely scratched the surface of the original's brilliance. Thank goodness at any given moment between the hours of 10 PM and 2 AM you are liable to hear this tune on your favorite urban radio station, and you'll more than likely find yourself singing "Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!" just because it still sounds so sweet.

Kanye Creeps Us Out With More 'Flashing Lights'

The third and what we presume last video for Kanye West's song "Flashing Lights" made its way around the net last night. Apparently this was actually the first video that was filmed, then it was scrapped for the second video that recently surfaced only to have that version be curbed as well in favor of the mysterious clip with Rita G. Confused yet? Well you will be after you watch this madness. This house of horrors version is dark, spooky and really has nothing to do with the song. Surprise, surprise. Another non-shocker: no Dwele, once again. I'd be upset, but I've stopped caring at this point.

New Edition Wins ASCAP Award

newedition1.jpgBobby Brown has made the news again. But this time it's his accomplishments with New Edition that garners our attention. As they celebrate their 25th anniversary, ASCAP is honoring New Edition with the Golden Note Award at its 21st Annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards. Bobby alongside Ralph Tresvant, Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell and Johnny Gill will join other singers, songwriters, composers and artists, such as Stevie Wonder and LL Cool J, as recipients of the Golden Note Award on June 23. Along with accomplishing solo success, the members of New Edition have released seven albums that included the hits "Candy Girl," "Can You Stand the Rain," and "Hit Me Off."  New Edition's influence can be seen in boy bands ranging from Boyz II Men to 'N Sync. We at SB congratulate the guys of New Edition on all their success, including you Bobby Brown. [SR]

Ashanti and Robin Thicke Make It Do What It Do

ashanti_robin_thicke.jpgFull disclosure: I'm a closet Ashanti fan. There, I said it. Now that my admission of guilt is out of the way, hopefully I won't get to many side-eyes for posting this new track from her freshly leaked album, The Declaration, on SoulBounce. But I'm digging her collabo with blue-eyed soul sensation, Robin Thicke, on "Things You Make Me Do." The synthesized sounds are sexy and oddly enough Ashanti and Thicke's voices blend well together. I will be adding this one to the Butta's Bedroom Breakdown playlist. Oops, now I've said too much.

Nas' New Album Cover: Now Even More Controversial!

nas_new_nigger_cover.jpgNot one to go down without a fight, Nas' potential new album artwork may no longer be entitled Nigger, but that doesn't mean that he can't come with the realness on the album cover artwork. Seems to be able to convey "nigger" without having it printed anywhere on the image, no? Is this cover meant to be thought-provoking? Yes. Provocative? Definitely. Conforntational? Absolutely. Expect the factions on either side of this issue, those who agree with this intent on initially wanting to title the album after the absolute worst word to call a Black person and those who think he's a fool for even attempting this feat, to deepen with this cover. Full disclosure: I love it, but then I'm known for being an angry, militant-minded Black woman. In the end, we'll just all have to wait and see which cover makes it onto Wal-Mart's shelves.

In second position is Esso with a comical video to match his hilarious rap. Last and far from least is Niyat bringing some progressive down South flava to your ears and eyes. Break ya neck to these.

Top 100 Soul/R&B Songs

#57: The Isley Brothers 'Footsteps in the Dark'

Isleysguns.jpgThere's a reason this song was straight jacked by Ice Cube with no variation. Although "Footsteps In The Dark" was a groove meant initially for Quiet Storm sets, there's something about the mood it creates that causes heads to nod involuntarily. The pre-"Mr. Biggs" Ron Isley would settle instead for posing slightly metaphorical questions in the face of his lover's possible indiscretions rather than committing an act of violence. Still a player in those days, his gentle falsetto would attempt to goad her into answering: Is this meant to be? Is there anything left for us? What else is out there for you?

Why are you doing this?

This is a signature track from the brothers Isley, featured on nearly every one of their Best-Of compilations. The track pre-dates me by about three years, and it's hard to believe it didn't chart as well as it should've when Go For Your Guns was released. The vocal delivery is pleading and beautiful, the music itself laid-back and slightly funky, as most of the Isley's offerings were. But it's the words--mature, slightly haunting and direct--that beg another question:

Why does a song about cheating nowadays have to be so crass?

Who Would You Rather Creep With? 'Part-Time' or 'Secret Lovers'?

stevie_wonder_atlantic_starr.JPG1985 was a good year for adultery. After all, there was not only one but two chart-topping odes to getting your sneaky freak on: Stevie Wonder's "Part-Time Lover" and Atlantic Starr's "Secret Lovers." Both of these songs were about something so wrong, but they sounded oh-so right.

Stevie's uptempo ditty--with Luther Vandross on backup no less--about "undercover passion on the run" was a breakthrough hit when it dropped. Off his In Square Circle album, "Part-Time Lover" hit number one on four charts simultaneously, making him the first artist in history to do so. Yeah, Stevie was the man even when singing about cheating.

Atlantic Starr's Barbara Weathers and David Lewis sang their faces off on "Secret Lovers." This slow jam about two married lovers was one of the band's biggest hits and is still a staple on urban radio. This song just makes you want to sing along with it--and I'm sure we all have--even if you don't agree with the subject matter.

So if you were gonna creep (not that we're encouraging that type of behavior), what would your soundtrack be?
