Gloria Gaynor Probably Wishes She Could Change Her Name, Too

For the past year or so, Gloria Gaynor has maintained that she would lead her gay fanbase to Christ, because our Lord and Savior is second only to John Travolta when it comes to His love of Disco. The Guardian catches up with Gaynor, who intends to set up a practice in which she will counsel women and couples as a minister would. Gaynor was born-again in 1982 and in 1997 published a book called I Will Survive, in which she recounts how she used to hang out with The '70s Geighs doing drugs, drinking, and being sinful. The divorcée now wants to keep couples together because "you don't break up because you don't like how somebody squeezes the toothpaste." This mission, quite understandably, does not include The Geighs (who in large part made her a legend) because she doesn't want to go to Hell with them. Too bad she doesn't realize that the only thing gayer than two men sleeping together is Disco music.

After the bounce, a full quote from Gaynor on The Geighs which includes, predictably, "I will pray for you," and a video of Diana Ross and RuPaul doing "I Will Survive," keeping the song in the gay tradition in a manner that only they can.

"I had a backlash from gay fans for a tiny period. Because they didn't understand where I was coming from. Now they recognise that my beliefs are my beliefs and that I have no opinions separate from the Bible. There are areas that we agree to disagree on. It's as simple as that. I don't have a problem with them having their beliefs, because my feeling is that God gives each and every one of us the right to not even believe in him. So who am I to try to take that away from somebody? I will always try to share my faith with any person who is willing to listen. When I feel a wall go up, we can talk about something else ... and I will pray for you."
