For those of you who live and breathe hip hop, you are most definitely aware of the many arenas that hip hop dwells. It's not just rhyming or break dancing after all. Hip hop has served as the muse and inspiration for such artists
Kehinde Wiley whose portrait of
Big Daddy Kane shown above, commissioned for the 2005 VH1
Hip Hop Honors, is a study in exemplary portraiture and will be featured in the exhibit "
RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture" currently being shown at the Smithsonian's
National Portrait Gallery now through October 26th. Other artists such as photographer
David Scheinbaum's works will be featured, as well DC-based graffiti writers. You would do yourself a disservice if you call yourself a lover of true hip hop and didn't check it out.

Seven Soji | June 12, 2008 3:29 PM | PermalinkPlease get down to see this exhibit if you are in the area/visiting. The pictures on the Smith site do it no justice. There's also other exhibits, one accompanied by a Nikki G poem. Love it!
Now they got me all hype for the bigger exhibit coming next year I think?
