#27: Jill Scott 'A Long Walk'

Someone once asked me why I love Jill Scott. I didn't even have to think before answering. I love her for her distinct, luscious vocals and infinity-octave range that provide color commentary for her lyrical play-by-play. I love that she takes listeners
on a journey, getting them all caught up in her moments and placing them right there. I love that she's one of the few artists around today that has the ability to take
something as mundane as a walk and transform it into a cultural,
other-worldly experience. In fact, that's exactly what she does with the Grammy-nominated "A Long Walk," from her 2x-platinum 2000 debut Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1. Here, we're treated to a unique introduction to the diva from Philly as she lets us tag along as she wanders the streets with her beloved. She shows herself as the sista you could dream with and scheme with, the one who can be passionate about politics while eating passion fruit, the one who can take a joke, and clearly ain't afraid to take a toke. All while reading Bible verses and humming The Roots' greatest hits. Who wouldn't want to take a walk with her?!? Give me a moment. I'm falling in love again. Sigh.

The song only reached #9 on the Billboard U.S. R&B charts, but quickly became a signature song at each of her shows. Speaking of which, since we at SBHQ are always telling people that they'll never fully appreciate Jill until they've heard her live, I figured I'd treat you to the live version of "A Long Walk," from 2001's Experience: Jill Scott 826+. And for those who might like the original, don't fret. The video is after the bounce. Now go take a walk...with Ms. Scott.
