A Soulful Noise
Is Jackson's 'Billie' Really the G.O.A.T.?
It's good to know that despite all of the wild rumors that Michael Jackson's health is deteriorating by the day, his music will live on forever. Just this week, the classic "Billie Jean" earned the title of "greatest dance record ever," according to a three-part poll conducted by the UK's BBC channel in conjunction with their Radio 2 dance music season. The UK poll had Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and James Brown's "Get Up
(I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" as numbers two and three on their
list. Please don't get me wrong. I love "Billie Jean." Love the video, love Mike's Motown at 25 performance of it. Everything. However, is it really the greatest dance song of all time? Is it even MJ's greatest dance song? While this will fall way short of a SoulPoll, we'd love to hear your thoughts. And while you weigh in, I'm gonna troll the 'net for more wild MJ rumors. They get better by the hour.

Never mind BJ (but yes, it's that bassline), I Feel Love at no. 2...?! Explain.

soulzkidd | July 21, 2008 9:46 PM | PermalinkI am also of the opinion that Off The Wall kicks Thriller's musical butt. However, when it comes to staying power, I might understand why Billie Jean won the crown. I teach kids all the time, and even the younger ones who weren't even a glimmer in their parents' eye when Thriller came out loooooooooooooove those songs. So I can see it.
Stephanie Renee | July 21, 2008 1:27 PM | PermalinkI would pit any song on Off The Wall against any song on the wildly overrated Thriller album and expect the OTW song to win. Yes, this includes "Billie Jean."
The only thing good about "Billie Jean" is that bass line.
barbelle | July 20, 2008 8:06 PM | PermalinkNot my favorite MJ song, but I don't disagree with the assertion. "Billie Jean" was a big record for him and I couldn't get enough of it as a kid.
Also, OFF THE WALL > THRILLER.
nOvaMatic | July 20, 2008 5:16 PM | PermalinkHmmm...not Billie Jean, I would gone for Off The Wall or Working Day And Night or Don't Stop Til You Get Enough.
Sharonda | July 19, 2008 2:34 PM | Permalinknot sure about that, I actually prefer Wanna Be Starting Something.
