FULL DISCLOSURE: Name a Universally-Adored Soul Classic That You Hate
Sometimes it's useful (read: fun) to push the envelope and break tradition. We can be brutally honest at The Most Comprehensive Black Music Blog in the Internet, because (1) we're just a blog, and (2) you don't know where any of us live. So there! Recently I asked the editors of this site as well as a few close comrades to do the one thing some of us are just afraid to do as music lovers, bloggers and Black folks. The mission was to name a classic, beloved Soul song that you personally cannot stand. Yes, we went there. These blasphemous confessions begin with Fave and continue after the bounce.
Fave (fridayfavecast.com)
"Float On" by The Floaters. I know this is a "classic" but I never really caught on to the whole "name+sign+talking" prelude to a weak bridge and even stranger hook. Are they getting high? Is that why they're floating? Where is this "Lover's Land"? Is this the kind of mack move that worked in the 70s...in the midst of Billy Dee, Isaac Hayes (RIP), Teddy Pendergrass, et al??? Show me the woman who claims to have came up off the goodies because of this song and I'll show you one helluva actress.
Cornfed (soultracks.com)
Ashford and Simpson's "Solid As A Rock". I know the deserving icons are known for classic formula soul pop confections, but dammit if this contrived, defensive marital declaration didn't protest too much (Is this the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) theme song or what???). The hooky rhythmic panting was also kinda creepy, almost as much any visuals of their marital pairing. *shudder*
DJ Diva (themixtress.com)
"Before I Let Go" by Frankie Beverly and Maze. When this song comes on...everybody and the mama and they granmama says "oooh..das is my song!" Maybe I hate it cause everybody likes it...but really? I dont like Frankie Beverly and them dudes...I think they are overated! When I play it at a party...it's a bathroom break!
This is the most overrated song in my opinion
ill Mami (hopelesslysarcastic.blogspot.com)
"Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" by Otis Redding. Such a lackluster song compared to his other hits. And the whistling just annoys the hell out of me, like scraping fingernails across a chalkboard annoying.
Harlem (dawsonink.net)
"Cassanova Brown" by Teena Marie.
Was always her worst song, in my opinion. To me, she sounded like she was drunk when she recorded this, which was probably the effect she was going for, but still... the way she held those notes made me want to bring her up on charges for improper groping. The whole track just sounds disjointed and even more depressing than it was meant to be. Boo, Teena. Boo. *dodging cyber-tomatoes*
nOvaMatic (novamatic.tumblr.com)
I fiercely hate Frankie Beverly and Maze's "Before I Let Go." My god, is this song potato salad? Must it be at every Black gathering? Everytime I hear this song I feel like it's being forced upon me, like cough medicine as a child. This is such a "party's over" song to me.
Those were our picks. Are you man or woman enough to add yours?

SUPERSTITION - STEVIE WONDER wompity wompa da wompuh wompa . that's what I hear.
hamadi | August 18, 2008 8:40 AM | PermalinkFirst off, I love this site, I've been glued to it all weekend...Now for my lil 2 cents..I Love You by Lenny Williams, I'm sorry but he would've pissed me off cryin and beggin like that--i HATE that song, and how ppl love it death I'll never know...I also agree with folks who listed Marvin Gaye songs...I LOVE Marvin, yet you would think Sexual Healing, Let's Get it On and Distant Lover were the only hits he had..Uggh..Teena Marie also gets on my nerves, I'm sorry, I can't get wit her..But I don't understand how so many ppl don't like Frankie Beverly and Maze!!! I was kinda shocked by that lol..
t.c.w. | August 17, 2008 1:19 PM | PermalinkI'm not even gonna leave my own opinions here, but these comments have been frikkin HIGH-larry-us! However, I'ma fight with the person who said Teena Marie's "Casanova Brown." Damn, doesn't the orchestration count for anything? LOL
And, with a nod to the person who mentioned T-Pain, may I say that I would like to start a personal crusade to destroy ALL autotune pulg-ins and machines on the planet. Anybody with me?
Stephanie Renee | August 16, 2008 10:38 AM | PermalinkThis is my first time here on this site, but this post is funny as hell!
Let's see, classics I don't like...
As much as I LOOOOVE Earth, Wind and Fire, I do not like "Boogie Wonderland". I feel like they jumped on the disco bandwagon when they didn't need to!!
Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out", maybe it's just me, but I don't really care for her that much for her to make an announce about her coming out. To what?
Ashford and Simpson, "Solid", yeah I have to co-sign, but they play that on the radio like they didn't make any other songs.
Chaka Khan "I'm Every Woman" and "Ain't Nodoby". Again, she has other songs, but they play those two only.
I'll be back with some more later.
mzvirgo | August 14, 2008 9:07 PM | PermalinkI'm just shocked at the Frankie B comments...omg...how could you not like that JAM!!! The song that everyone seems to love that I hate is the song Woman to Woman. I'm like she was a damn fool...lol. Cause I Love You by Lenny Williams annoys me sometimes, only cause it's so damn long.
IKandiDiva | August 14, 2008 3:10 PM | PermalinkIs MJ's "She's Out of My Life" considered a classic? Cuz it either makes me change the channel or roar with laughter when he breaks down at the end.
Cosign to "Always & Forever", "Secret Lovers"... anything that's overplayed wedding-mix.
heyhey | August 14, 2008 2:09 PM | PermalinkLuther Vandross is unquestionably a legend but "Dance With My Father Again" was just weird to me, for some reason it makes me uncomfortable
D. Will | August 14, 2008 12:53 PM | PermalinkI agree with John Murph I truly HATE (and hate is a strong word) the song Secret Lovers!! I guess cause they played it so much on the radio when it came out. There where other songs that Atlantic Starr made that were so much better than Secret Lovers (Closer, Catch a 4-leaf clover). I just totally throw up when it comes on!
flagal1970 | August 14, 2008 12:51 PM | PermalinkI have to co-sign on the Frankie Beverly and Maze thing. But not just "Before I Let Go" their entire music catalog. My hate for FB&M started after I met my husband who is a HUGE fan bordering on obsessive. FB&M haven't had a new record since the 80s and my husband insists on buying live DVDs, CDs, greatest hits packages etc.!!! He goes to their concerts every time they come to Charleston. They play the same damn songs, why do you need to kick out $30 bucks for a show you can hear on CD or watch on your DVD and now taped from BETJ! Damn you Frankie! Damn you all to hell!!!!
Whew! I feel better now. Thank-you soulbounce for letting me vent. I love yall.
Kim | August 14, 2008 8:59 AM | PermalinkI really, really dislike that Gloria Gaynor song "I Will Survive"...just hearing it makes my toenails curl!
SoundNexx | August 14, 2008 8:52 AM | PermalinkI think it's gotta be Stevie Wonder 'I Just Called To Say I Love You' ... it makes me wanna tear my hair out! How could such a genius have produced such a cringe-worthy song?!
As for modern, anything by Robin Thicke, he almost tries too hard ... except 'Got 2 Be Down ft Faith Evans (the only song i listen to on the 'Evolution Of ...')
Can't believe the Smokey Robinson comments though! How can anyone hate 'Tracks Of My Tears'?
UK Soul | August 14, 2008 5:50 AM | PermalinkYa'll are killing me over here. Frankie Beverly and Maze?!?!?! Over rated? I think my heart stopped beating and my kidneys just shut down.
ANYTHING by Keith Sweat sucks...and I blame those who had buying power in the 80s and 90s, who helped the man who sings like his nose is stuffed up, become a star. Ya'll should be 'shamed!
Since "hater" is my middle name, I'm shocked that I cant think of any older songs that I despise...i've focused most of my hate on whatever is supposedly "hot" right now..like T-Pain and nem.
suga | August 13, 2008 11:41 PM | PermalinkI can't stand "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder. Saccharine sweet and awful.
sdg1844 | August 13, 2008 11:02 PM | Permalink"Before I Let Go" is the song that makes me look for a drink whenever/wherever it comes on, but to this list, let me add "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang. If you have to insist that we're gonna have a good time tonight, then something's wrong.
tha worst | August 13, 2008 9:08 PM | Permalink"Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye. YUCK.
QH | August 13, 2008 8:42 PM | Permalink"When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge - every time I hear it, I want to throw up in my mouth.
S. Flemming | August 13, 2008 8:26 PM | PermalinkI don't know if people consider this classic, but I sure hate Tonight Is The Night, Betty Wright. sure do.
Reece | August 13, 2008 8:24 PM | PermalinkI love Erykah, but Honey was annoying to me.Anything by The Dream.I love After 7 but Heat Of The Moment annoyed me because my dad played it alllll the time.Anything by Lil Wayne.Brian McKnight Love Of My Life (i think it was the video that kind of turned me away). There's a couple more, but I can't think of them right now.
Anything that is over sampled also annoys me.
Sharonda | August 13, 2008 8:08 PM | Permalinkyup Kim H, I agree, and completely bout to die @ "something the Cosbys would've had sex to" thanks LC...
speaking of whiny ass men, I don't know who said that that was some good singing Keith Sweat was doing on "Make it Last Forever" is a lie and the truth ain't in them.... I wanted it to stop back when it was "hot" and I still do.
Ninjagirrl | August 13, 2008 7:17 PM | PermalinkOutta my head Ninjagirrl!!
soulstar | August 13, 2008 6:54 PM | PermalinkMy list:
Jeffrey Osborne - The Woo Woo Song
Mandy | August 13, 2008 6:50 PM | PermalinkShirley Murdock - As We Lay
Kool & The Gang - Celebration
I'm in full agreement with Kim H.
I cannot take Smoky Robinson's voice. at. all. That song "Quiet Storm" makes me wanna rip my ears off.
Aaron Neville's voice has that same effect....and whoever sings that song "People Make 'the World Go 'Round"...and all of their other songs.
I guess I have something against whiny ass men who sing in falsetto, save for Maxwell and a few others.
soulstar | August 13, 2008 6:47 PM | PermalinkI cannot stand Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" or "Distant Lover." News school: Anything by Ne-Yo or Lloyd make me cringe and Joe, Eric Benet, Rashaan Patterson and Raheem Devaughn bore me. Now, I will go back into hiding.
Anon |
This is why we can't be friends Anon. I Want You and Distant Lover are great.
Mandy | August 13, 2008 6:46 PM | PermalinkMay all things Holy and Christmas-timey forgive me, and it's not the SONG per se, but it's this version......* hangs head * The Temptations version of Silent Night can disappear from my life and I would be happy for 2 months. I mean it's played from November 1 til December 25th @ 11:59 pm....and this may sound scrooge-like, but it puts me right out the Holiday spirit. DAMN! they play that song to DEATH!
Ninjagirrl | August 13, 2008 6:39 PM | PermalinkI cannot stand Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" or "Distant Lover." News school: Anything by Ne-Yo or Lloyd make me cringe and Joe, Eric Benet, Rashaan Patterson and Raheem Devaughn bore me. Now, I will go back into hiding.
Anon | August 13, 2008 6:33 PM | PermalinkI cannot stand Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" or "Distant Lover." News school: Anything by Ne-Yo or Lloyd make me cringe and Joe, Eric Benet, Rashaan Patterson and Raheem Devaughn bore me. Now, I will go back into hiding.
Anon | August 13, 2008 6:33 PM | PermalinkI cannot stand any song by Lionel Richie post-Commodores. Every friggin' song of his sounds cheesy as hell! LIke a lounge act.
Nikki | August 13, 2008 5:59 PM | PermalinkNo idea whether this is universally adored or not, but my mother used to play the Commodores' "Three Times a Lady" on autorepeat--or worse, on a cassette she'd rewind over and over again. That pause for rewinding was the worst, because there was always that false hope you wouldn't hear the damn thing again. (Ditto "Always and Forever," but that's already been mentioned.)
FYI: I made this post as an alt-rock corollary to yours. Thanks for a great idea.
Matos W.K. | August 13, 2008 5:55 PM | PermalinkI've never liked "Spend the Night" by the Isley Brothers, it sounds like something the Cosbys would've had sex to.
L.C. | August 13, 2008 5:53 PM | PermalinkI personally hate "Loving You" by Minnie Ripperton. I respect that she can hit high notes but that song annoys the crap out of me.
ayfc | August 13, 2008 5:42 PM | PermalinkYour last countdown entry, "Between the Sheets", grates my nerves.
One of the few cases in which Puffy took something and actually made it BETTER.
Kinky Twists | August 13, 2008 4:30 PM | Permalinkyeah, sign me up for 'always and forever' by heatwave. that song is way too sappy and seems like it's stuck in a leave it to beaver time warp or something.
and tho i like f.b. and maze, i never understood how people just darn near jump out their draws when their songs come on. i love 'happy feelings' like the next cat, but overall, i never got it.
marq diggy | August 13, 2008 4:17 PM | PermalinkI will probably be back -
Classic- Juicy by Mtume.
j | August 13, 2008 3:56 PM | PermalinkModern- You're All I need - Method and Mary, although it has grown on me.
Waterfalls-TLC ( I generally hate "message" songs)
I love baby girl, but I did not like Aaliyah's "At your best". The radio killed it after she passed and everyone loved it but me. I wanted to hear other songs other than that one, that's all.
TiP | August 13, 2008 3:17 PM | PermalinkI absolutely hate N-E, yes, I said N-E thing Smokey Robinson sings. He scares me when I see him, and makes me cringe when I hear him.
Kim H. | August 13, 2008 3:12 PM | PermalinkI can't believe ya'll listed any Maze song! Not because I love them so much, but because I don't like anything by Maze!! Anytime I utter anything like that though, I fear that I'm in jeopardy of having my ghetto card revoked as Black folk revere Maze like some sort of demi-gods. Thanks for letting me know I'm not totally alone in the universe.
v-tini | August 13, 2008 2:49 PM | PermalinkI'm bracing myself for the barrage of incredulous comments that while inevitably follow this next comment. I really can't stand Jill Scott's Getting in the Way. While I LOVE Jill and think she is the shiz-nit, I've always hated that song. I'm sorry.
Always and Forever by Heatwave.
There I said it! What?!!
Danielle | August 13, 2008 2:45 PM | PermalinkReasons- Earth, Wind & Fire
blknite | August 13, 2008 2:41 PM | PermalinkYea I went there
Well here you go:
Prince's "My Name Is Prince" -- ick!
Atlantic Starr's "Secret Lovers"
Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You"
John Murph | August 13, 2008 2:40 PM | Permalinkok I'm sorry everyone...Donny Hathaway - A Song for You...
MuseSik | August 13, 2008 2:26 PM | PermalinkI admit it! I can't take this song anymore!
Ok, don't hate me...but mine is "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Diana Ross. My skin crawls everytime I hear it!
Danielle | August 13, 2008 2:00 PM | PermalinkI know this is almost blasphemy, but I can't stand Marvin Gaye's :Sexual Healing." It kills me that this, out of all of Marvin's hits, is the one that got a Grammy. Gaye looks like death-warmed-over in the video (as they say, cocaine is a heck of a drug) and the beat sounds stuck in the 80s. Give me "I Want You" or "You Sure Love to Ball" any day of the week.
Coltrane Jenkins | August 13, 2008 1:56 PM | PermalinkElisabeth, I'm coming to join ya!
