Battle of the Beats

Is It Raheem DeVaughn or Jesse Powell That Knocks 'You' Out?

Today's Battle of the Beats should be a good one, as fellow crooners Raheem DeVaughn and Jesse Powell duke it out over the exclusive use of the word "You" in their respective songs. In this corner is DeVaughn, representing the New School, who may set some kind of record for the use of the word in one song. So he has that going for him. It was in 2005 when the "R&B hippie neo soul rock star" hit us with The Love Experience, with this song as the third single released. And in that corner is Powell, Old School all the way, who may also hold a record as the person who got the most syllables out of a monosyllabic word. Which isn't easy, folks. It was actually 10 years ago this week that Jesse released the certified gold 'Bout It, with "You" as the second single.

So there you have it. A Battle for the ages. Old School vs. New School. Which one knocks "You" out? Let's get ready to rumble!!!

Raheem DeVaughn: "You"

Jesse Powell: "You"

Clearly the Soul Singer here is Jesse. Jesse "You" is about commitment, love and long life, I love Devaughn's "You" it is very sexy! Both are winners to me!

Just the fact we are still discussing Jesse's version 10+ years after he made it is a clear indicator his is the greater. I love Raheem, but I have to ask, will we remember Raheem's 'You' in 10+ years? Good song, but greatness stands the test of time.

Jesse Powell please make a comeback and rescue us from mediocre R&B singers.

"You" by Jesse Powell is a classic, the boy can blow. I'm a big fan of both, I have Jesse and Raheem cd's. Both to good to choose.

Because I'm ol'skool...I gotta ride wit Jessie! Although I like DeVaughn's "you".....Jessie killed it...that song jus took me back:-) Big ups to both artists

Definitely Jesse! I love Raheem's you too! But something about Jesse's drive me crazy.

Oh this is just WRONG! :-) They can't be compared. Both songs have a style of their own and I love them for that very reason. When I hear Jesse Powell's version, I automatically think about being "in" love. When I hear Raheem's version, I think sexy.

Raheem...no question. The first time I heard Rah's version live, it became classic to me.

There is no contest, in my mind. Not really a big fan of male falsetto, except Howard Hewitt and Maxwell. Raheem's version is all sensuality and will go on my "Baby Conception" mixtape, should I ever find the need for one. LOL

Raheem!!!

10 yrs ago, my upstairs neighbor played Jesse Powell's song "You" on blast for 6hrs straight. Made me LOATHE a beautiful song.

Raheem's song is sooo damn sexy. I love when he goes all acapella w/it when he sings it live. I LOVE it...my vote goes for Raheem.

Every word in this song's gonna be about YOU! Rah Baby!

Gotta go with Raheem's version. Just oozes that right amount of of sensuality.

I don't think they should be commpared together since the only similarity in the songs is the title. Two different songs, two different styles, tempos, melodies, etc. I love both songs and respect them both for their individuality. Hopefully, Raheem will continue to come strong. And I wish Jesse Powell hadn't been slept on so much. His YOU is beautiful and his vocal range is great!!!! I would love to have him come back out.

Raheem is the man, but Jesse Powell's version is a classic. Can't say that about Raheem's.

Gotta go with Raheem on this one!

Maybe it was timing but everybody used that Jesse Powell song as their wedding song and I was just sick of it!

Love both of them, but I'm giving it to Raheem because he doesn't sounds whiny

Raheem, of course!

I never really liked Jesse Powell's "You" although I could appreciate his vocal nuances. Raheem's "You" was such a sentimental cascade of emotions (lyrically, vocally, & instrumentally) that whenver I heard it played, it immediately sent my mind coasting in a midnight groove sorta way. You know, the feeling you use to get from great R&B before the genre turned into "how many ways can I screw you tonight?" Raheem's "You" was undoubtedly a powerful song with a powerful message; classic in every way & one of the best R&B tunes of this decade. He wins this one guys!

Raheem

Not a Jesse fan. Love the Raheem cut.

Jesse's got my vote on this one. His "You" is a total classic soul song. Raheem's is good, but Jesse's is forever...

I wanna fight you Harlem.

As much as it pains me, I gotta go with Jesse on this one. I HEART THIS SONG. Not an easy decision. You wanna just drop your Granny pannies when a man tell you that EVERY WORD in this song is gonna be about you.

Whew!

But I got history with that Jesse song. Loved his album too. And IMO he killed Enchantment's Gloriaaaaaa!

I'm going with Raheem on this one even though Jesse's song used to be my jam.

ohhhh baby. no need to listen. this is my favorite Raheem DeVaughn song, so of course I'm going with it....LOVE HIM!!!!

Raheem DeVaughn all day. This is one of my favorite songs in his repertoire. The house version is BANANAS. I was never a fan of Jesse, nor this song.

Jesse Powell. I used to LOVE that song. What happened to him? I need to go dig his CD.
