Battle of the Beats

Who Would You Rather Do 'Anything' With? SWV or Janet?

Perhaps this a little too slow and sexy on a Halloween Friday? But whatevs! I know you've been waiting for this battle, and is it any wonder? There are, at last count, a bazillion songs titled "Anything." So here we are, with two of our favorite acts here at SoulBounce. In one corner we have the extended version of SWV's "Anything" interlude (which later became an enormous, Wu-Tang-featuring, Grandmaster Flash-sampling remix). And in the other, Janet Jackson's "Anything" from The Velvet Rope--the quintessential babymaking joint that somehow managed to surpass "Anytime, Anyplace," a feat I certainly didn't think was possible. Are you banging your head against the keyboard yet? This one is a doozy!

Debórah Bond 'Dreams' Up A New Video

Recently we've seen artists take it upon themselves to revive previously released material in the hopes of reaching more ears the second time around. Singers D'Angelo and Keyshia Cole immediately come to mind, and now we can add indie soul songstress Debórah Bond to that group. She just shot a video for the song "See You In My Dreams" and is using the hit track from her 2003 debut album, DayAfter, as a teaser for her new album, which is scheduled to be released in early 2009. That is wonderful news for fans of Bond's brand of sultry soul, and she tells me that the next album will be a creative step up and showcase her signature sound with fresh, unique production featuring her band, Third Logic. I for one can't wait to hear what she has on tap, but in the meantime SoulBounce is proud to present the world premiere of Debórah Bond's "See You In My Dreams" right here, right now.

It's a 'Numbers Game' to the Thievery Corporation & Chuck Brown

thievery_corporation_chuck_brown.JPG You wouldn't think that Electronica and Go-Go go together, but the Thievery Corporation and Chuck Brown are about to change your mind. Before Wale came along to tear the roof off the sucker, two of DC's most famous musical exports included these acts on opposite ends of the music spectrum. But the Godfather of Go-Go and the DJ duo have teamed up for a track from Thievery Corp's latest album, Radio Retaliation, that sounds like it came off of the soundtrack to a '70s Blaxploitation flick with its wah wah guitars, tight horn section and funky groove. If this one doesn't make you want to don some hot pants, a leather trench or a pair of platform shoes and dress up like Cleopatra Jones or Shaft tonight for Halloween, I don't know what will. Good looking out to Stone @ The Couch Sessions for the 411 on this one.

Hip Hop Sites Eerily Silent Over Soulja Boy Slavery Comment

soulja-boy-sunglasses.jpgDespite the melodramatic rollercoaster that has been all of our lives since the Republican Party announced their Vice Presidential running mate, I can honestly say that I have never felt more offended, incensed with anger, and ready to throw 'bows more than what I read regarding Soulja Boy's comments yesterday on how he wished to thank slavemasters for his success in all of his eighteen years on this Earth. He wishes to thank them for his ability to remain ignorant of his own history, ignorant of how many millions of people he has offended, and ignorant of how stupid he will likely feel just five years from now when he realizes what an ass he has made of himself (hopefully). But now I have others in my crosshairs: Hip Hop websites. Those websites who are responsible for the constant barrage of leaks and mostly afterthought mixtapes that inflitrate the internet on a daily basis to the tune of at least 75 posts per day that come across my desk every day, yet so far have been unable to speak on this travesty? I'm not going to call anyone out, but you all know who I'm speaking of, and it's a shame. Props to Hip Hop DX and also to Black Voices and Idolator both of which are not Hip Hop sites in the least for reporting on this. But where's XXL's blog? Where's VIBE's? Where's The Source's??? Oh yeah, that's right. Too busy worrying about the bottom line to remember when your core fan base has been completely disrepected.

Keyshia Cole Plays Her Cardz Right In New Video

Well look what we have here. A new 2pac video! Sike! This is actually a new Keyshia Cole video with 2pac making another posthumous appearance on film for their recycled duet "Playa Cardz Right." 2pac's mom dukes, Afeni Shakur, makes an appearance in the clip that finds her son kicking a few verses from the grave. I gotta give Keyshia props for reaching down deep in her sexy bag and bringing the fever this time around. Her hair, makeup and styling are on point. Keyshia is in fine form here vocally and visually, and this video is a fitting complement to the song.

Common Has No Faith in the Political System, Still Supports Obama

In an interview with OkayplayerTV, Common Hussein Sense lays out the grounded, logical reasons why he is voting for Barack Obama for President. His straightforwardness about his distrust in the political system and his assessment that Obama is the candidate that he sees really trying to do good for people is spot on. He keeps it real, emphasizing that the only way to affect what's going on politically is to do your part by voting.
"We can't wait on the political system but [we] can influence the political system..."
It's been a long haul and we're all experiencing election fatigue. All that's left for us to do now is vote. That's all. Change is coming. Get on board with Common, and with those of us who've already cast our ballots so that come Wednesday there at least a little bit of our faith in the political system can be restored. [OKP]

Jamie Foxx & T.I. Are 'Just' Right With New Track

Just the other day, we hipped you to the fact that Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx has a new album on deck entitled Man's Intuition, due for release December 16th. The lead single, "Just Like Me," was released to radio this week and I must say, after a few listens, it's grown on me. Like, a lot. The track is co-produced by The Dream and Tricky Stewart, and features Foxx and my new favorite rapper T.I. owning up to the fact that they may have in fact met their matches--women who are just like them, "all up in the club, poppin' lots of bub." Nice. I really can't wait to see what they come up with when it's time to work around T.I.'s jail sentence make the video. Seriously, though, if urban radio's infatuation with The Dream is any indication, this one is destined to get lots of airplay. Which, for a change, wouldn't be such a bad thing. But that's just me. Check it out and let us know what you think.

New Videos From Giovanca, Evidence & Convinced

It's that time again to highlight some cool videos that may have flown under the radar this week. First up is a new video from Giovanca, who may be unknown to many but she's huge in Amsterdam. This colorful, dreamy video is from her debut album Subway Silence. Next we got Dilated Peoples member Evidence taking us on a trip to the airport with a video for the title track to his The Layover EP. Rounding out the bunch is rapper Convinced with a mad decent video for a soul hop track from his debut disc, Refreshing. No tricks here, all treats. Enjoy!

Do The Jacksons Ever Visit Each Other? Or, Like, Call?

I have a long, tortured history covering the Jacksons on this site. They're my favorite performers. They're also endearingly loco. I resisted the urge to write-up Jermaine Jackson's 1,547th reveal that the kids are getting back together for a tour. It's maddening. There's a certain formula to the way these things unfold:
  • Jermaine talks.
  • Michael denies.
  • Latoya says something for some reason.
  • Janet shrugs and continues letting JD paw all over her.
  • Jermaine re-confirms.
  • No one knows what he's talking about.
  • Repeat every 3 months or so.

Dres Revisits 'The Choice is Yours' For Obama

File this one under the "But Of Course Files": Dres of underrated Native Tongues duo Black Sheep has reworked the lyrics of their infamous "The Choice Is Yours" track to show his support for Barack Obama. Remember back when the original dropped, George Bush was in office, we were at war with Iraq and everyone kept using the mantra "Peace In The Middle East" whenever they won an award at an award show? Funny how not much has changed since 1992, huh? In any case, this time, instead of an image of Bush Sr. being ripped down as something we cannot get with, we have images of Obama's adversaries along with a rousing message in support of some much needed change.
