Behold: The Mostly Awful 'American Music Award' Nominees!
The American Music Awards have earned the distinction of being the most useless, vile, and insipid awards ceremony ever and the worst thing Dick Clark has ever brought upon us. Seriously, at least Grammy has the decency to be shady. AMA is just flat-out bulltastic. This is proven year after year when the nominess are released (like last year when Pretty Ricky was nominated for something), and then things get worse when people actually take statues home. Last year, T-Pain won for Favorite Male Artist in the Soul/R&B category and Rihanna won Favorite Female. We live in a Pop nation and such things are to be expected, but doesn't it make your skin crawl just a little bit? You know how these things tend to have a documentary effect where the winners, regardless of merit, write the history? The people that will be written about are the ones charting and winning awards, people, even if they are AMAs.
Check out some nominees of note after the bounce. You will laugh, you will cry. You will shake your damn head. Vigorously. Then you'll wonder, where is Jesus, already?

Award ceremonies are beyond a joke nowadays, it's the same here with awards shows like the MOBO's and the BRIT's. It's all about being popular and awarding those that have sold bucketloads of albums rather than awarding talent. Whatever happened to the days when talent was celebrated? I mean, really celebrated. These mediocre artists would not have had a look in.
On another note, the only people up there that deserve their nominations are Alicia and Mary, both have proved themselves time over that they are strong contenders in music. Also, I'm sure that I wasn't hallucinating last year or anything but Jill Scott released a solid album, as did Chrisette Michele. Why aren't they receiving some love? It just seems that talent always takes the backburner over artists that... well... don't have any longevity within the industry compared to those that are continuously being pushed out of the door by award shows. Nowadays it seems it's them playing into the media's hands and awarding artists that are more accepted sales wise.

Divo | October 14, 2008 5:10 PM | Permalinki've been done with nearly all award shows for a while now, but the AMA's were one that i abandoned early. let's look at the name--American Music Awards--this is the face of American music? i'm not blaming these artists (a few of them are my favorites), but seriously, this is the best and brightest of American music, collectively? is there even a category for the original American music, jazz? they should call this show what it is: the Popular Music Awards. deeper still, the Shaking My Damn Head Awards, or the Zero Credibility Awards. seriously, who watches this? whoever likes this kind of thing is insulting their own intelligence.
