A Soulful Noise
Could Solange Be The Next Janet?
There are a lot of similarities in the stories of Solange and Janet Jackson in her early solo days, as detailed in an article about the younger Knowles for VIBE. Both have had to struggle against the fame of older, much more successful siblings to prove their talent and form their own voice; both had debuts that were "unmitigated bombs." Yet despite the easiness with which Solange can, and has been, dismissed, it's moderately safe to say that she really isn't going anywhere. It seems that if she was going to fold under the pressure, she should have done so years ago. Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams defied expectations by doing well on the charts and was praised by many critics and writers (the subheading for the VIBE article calls it one of the best R&B albums of the year). It's extremely early to compare Solange's burgeoning music career to Janet's longstanding success, but the potential is there. [VIBE]

I could not even read the article because the title freaked me out!!
Tafari | October 30, 2008 11:50 PM | PermalinkFolks, although as a Janet fan, I understand some of the testiness, but I think many of you are forgetting that Janet was not depending on her famous brothers nor her music to have a career in the beginning.
Do not discount the impact she had on pop culture as an ACTRESS first. Good Times, Diff'rent Strokes and Fame, y'all. Then the music was starting to take off in its own right. Solange??? Ummmm, no. No such alternate career to refer to. No such artistic vision. And when Janet finally did get away from that first horrible marriage and turned 18, she released a kick-azz personal statement album that has launched an amazing career, even with the past few years of dud-ism. Give props where they are due! Solange doesn't even come close.
Stephanie Renee | October 30, 2008 1:33 PM | PermalinkLMAO@ Jennifer:) actually I am not angry at Ro's suggestions, I just find it crazy as my uncle lenny when he got back from Nam:) I have wasted about 15 minutes of my life listening to tidbits of Solanges album and to be blunt, it sucks. Does she have talent? yeah she does, the sista can sing but so could the lady stocking produce at my local grocery. Everyone who can hold a note should not sing, thats my story and I am sticking to it. In closing, in the immortal words of the great poet Dolomite; "I am what I am and I am the very best that I am, and for those who dont like it, I could confidentially not give a damn" :)

miss concrete jungle | October 30, 2008 11:11 AM | PermalinkNow Ro, you made this thread just for me didn't you? lol
Being nice: Solange does have a few traits in her background and story that also pertain to Ms. Jackson. Even though their styles are completely different, music and performance wise, I can understand the similarity. Also, we must remember unlike Solange's first album, Janet Jackson's debut actually had an R&B hit, and some great songs (The Magic is Working, and Say You Do come to mind); Solange's debut bombed all around and doesn't seem like it could be in the same Universe as Sol-Angel. Who knows though, more similarities may develop with time?
Being real: Negro please!
Barry Archie | October 29, 2008 11:56 PM | PermalinkI don't think Solange could be the next Janet. I think part of Janet's success is due to the fact that she was a female, had she been Mike's brother, I doubt her career would be what it is. There just isn't enough room for two Ms. Knowles' ( 3 if you count Tina.)
khalid | October 29, 2008 9:58 PM | PermalinkStoney doesn't like anyone but erykah badu (wink, wink)
jennifer | October 29, 2008 8:14 PM | PermalinkActually, Janet's eponymous debut from '82 has held up well. And had a few Janet-isms that would later be fleshed out when she teamed with Jam & Lewis on her third LP, "Control."-QH
QH | October 29, 2008 7:59 PM | PermalinkIt's a fair comparison in the broadest sense only. I bought the sophomore CD of Solange and still give it much play in the blazer. A side note...Am I the only one who thinks that Jan's debut was cute and charmingly effervescent for its time? It was also the 10th most successful R&B album of 1983 and scored 3 Top 20 R&B hits, but I guess the "every album before Control, bombed myth" is just too addictive to pass up repeating.
Langston | October 29, 2008 7:22 PM | Permalinki liked janet's first album "janet jackson". i don't think it was boring. "young love" is my jam!!

dar | October 29, 2008 6:52 PM | Permalink@ Stoney ..just wow..Ro was just summing up the vibe article. I actually like Solange as a writer..she is a VERY good writer and thinks she should concentrate on that but as a singer or even a performer she is miles behind her sister. Janet was a born entertainer and having seen Solange live she is very boring.
blknite | October 29, 2008 4:26 PM | Permalinkstonyisland is consistently an uptight snarkasaurus
huny | October 29, 2008 4:23 PM | PermalinkI will admit that I kind of slept on Solange at first but her album is really good. Different. i agree with the parallel btwn Janet and Solange. One thing, at least Solange has more vocal chops than Janet. And I love Janet, but we all know the deal.
Miss Cocoa Luv | October 29, 2008 4:12 PM | PermalinkI think it's an EXCELLENT analogy. Contrary to most of the comments prior to this one, Janet released 2 albums before 'Control': 'Janet Jackson' (1982) and 'Dream Street' (1984). Albums so bad, bland and boring that most of y'all didn't know they existed! And Solange got off to better start because her 2nd album got SO much more love the Janet's 2nd joint. But, just like Janet, all Solange has to do is find her voice (Does Janet even have a voice? It always seemed like she just sorta breathed into the mic and let Jam & Lewis make the magic...), get her team and production thing together and...HEY! Ya never know.
Songboy3 | October 29, 2008 4:10 PM | Permalink@Ro- I can see the comparison from a theoretical point of view whcih is what I think VIBE and you were coming from...the younger sister coming out of the shadows of the older sibling to forge her own way...
DLS77 | October 29, 2008 3:58 PM | Permalink@Stoneyisland-yikes man! that came off a little harsh- couldn't tell if you were beiing tongue-n-cheek or really angry? Ro was just reporting on a VIBE article makign the comparison- she didn't make it on her own. However, I persoanlyl, see where it comes from. BTW, I bought Sol-Angel and I like it. In fact, I like it more than the current Beyonce stuff out. I did not by her B-day, nor do I have any plans of buying her Sasha Fierce album. I think Solange does have a different style but is getting completely overshadowed to the point where Bey and (i'm sure Papa Knowles) worked it so Solange and her song could be in the Feria commenrical as well as be a guest on Bey's upcoming tour. if they really wanted to get out of her way and let her get her own recognition, Bey wouldn't be dropping her album in Nov. when Sol just dropped hers in Aug. I think THAT is really selfish. She (Bey) could have let Solange contiue with promoting her record without having to contend with Bey's album out there. You should take a listen before you totally dismiss Solange's album...you may be pleasantly surprised.
WTF? I dont know what Ro is sniffing, enhaling or main lining but to compare Solange to Janet is preposterous! Solange's ONLY fame is being knocked up at 16, married and being Beyonce's sister. I dont know one person who purchased her CD, seriously not one person. Janets first solo album has outsold Sol-wack's album by a couple million copies give or take. I havent seen any of Solange's video's but I would be willing to bet a kidney she is no Janet Jackson when it comes to dancing. Where in Gods name did you come up with this comparison?? Next thing you know, you'll be comparing Rihanna to Patti Labelle and T-Pain to Luther.........Potential huh? more like N-word pleeeeeease:)
stoneyisland | October 29, 2008 3:36 PM | PermalinkI think the similarities are certainly there. I have yet to listen to her album, though I was interested initially. Will she stick with the same sounds the next couple of albums like Janet did for Control and Rhythm Nation 1814? Will she make a break for more sophisticated waters with her fourth LP like Janet did with Janet. Will she go further into her 'dark' closet as Janet did with her fifth record, The Velvet Rope? Sorry if my 'count' is 'off' as it very well may be. You are asking if Solo's career will be like Janet's, so I'm outlining to that point of album releases. Will Solo have a Superbowl moment as Janet did? God knows she's already been married and divorced quickly. What else? LOL.
Someone will have to inform on how awesome Janet's Control album sold; how the touring went off for that record...because that was the album that really thrust her into the spotlight, no? And it was critically acclaimed as well as monetarily successful, no? While "Angels" has been acclaimed, how successful will its run be? How many units has it moved thus far? Will it explode further with continued releases. Lots of questions here, but the basis of what you imply I must agree with. But then that would be admitting Beyonce is as big as Michael Jackson.......................gonna let that one ride ;)
Madame Zenobia | October 29, 2008 3:32 PM | PermalinkI like Solange, Solange has the potential for longevity, but I don't think just cause she's the kid sister, that this analogy really works.
Plus, while I am feeling Solange's LP, I have trouble taking her "cry" of individuality away from her sister seriously when she is in a make-up commercial with her, using her song. "God Given Name" my tail. All in love, Solange has got potential though.-QH
