Enter Kanye's Ice Cream Dream World In 'Heartless'
Behold! The first video in the series that will likely be part one of all the videos made for "Heartless," Kanye West's new Auto-Tune resplendent single from the soon-to-be-released 808's & Heartbreak. What's obvious by watching this video is that he's a fan of animation. Unlike the video for "Good Morning," it's not all that exciting. The video for "Heartless" is essentially like most videos out there filled with pretty girls and a man laying his emotions bare, except it feels as though you've entered a veritable technicolor dream-world of colors from an old Duran Duran video. I'm not disliking this video because Kanye so easily works my last nerve. I'm just disliking it because it's visually and stylistically underwhelming. Feel free to disagree.

I like that Kanye is "trying" to be "different" artistically. He does have background as a artist and it shows through his work. I like the idea but I don't like that I looks like a cartoon version of every other video with women just taking up space on the screen. They were placeholders that I would rather not have seen. Thats my only problem with it. If your going to do something "different" actually be different and unique. It looks like a watered down cartooned down version of all other hip hop videos. pure crap.

The crap I have heard so far sounds like shit T-pain refused to put on his album. I cant get down and support this one Kanye. When you start making real hip hop again, holla at cha boy.

As for Ralph Bakshi, he has done just as much shitty work with rotoscope (Wizards, Cool World) as he has good (Fire & Ice, Lord of the Rings).
Props to Kanye and Hype Williams doing something different, and doing a decent job of it too.
Paco | November 8, 2008 12:34 AM | PermalinkI will agree that this videos cheap attempt at a Ralph Bakshi-esque, Rotoscope vision is about as dry as Animal Crackers and NO milk. When Bakshi (look him up on Wikipedia) does Rotoscope, even though it more or less looks like this, it still has a gritty edge and rough Pop culture appeal that this lacks. What I can’t agree to is the amount this may have incurred to Kanye or the label, as Rotoscope is not cheap (though you can’t tell by this) but Auto-Tune (thanks to Mr. West, Lil’ Wayne and of course T-Pain) is. I appreciate the attempt though but I expected more from him. AND if you didn’t notice the beginning credits, it's a Hype Williams creation no less! FAIL!
SquarerootZ | November 7, 2008 6:21 PM | Permalinkgoes to show that the music industry is cutting costs left and right. its very easy, and cheap, to produce a video like this.
blkbandit | November 7, 2008 5:24 PM | Permalinkmore like "Soulless."
