Nevertheless, Rolling Stone's contributor Alan Light sheds some light on how this list was compiled -- mostly by artists and journalists.

I commend Rolling Stone for at least getting today's contemporary music artists involved with this list. Although it doesn't not explain why there weren't a lot of female singers on this list.

Both the male and female artists have a lot of male singers on their lists.
