Your Regularly-Scheduled Controversial Auto-Tune Post Now Features Q-Tip!

Look, we can gripe and moan about the use of Auto-Tune and the Vocoder until we're blue in the face but, although they are closely related, there are marked differences between the two. Mainly, Auto-Tune is intended for pitch-correction and smoothing out vocal inaccuracies. It's only when your current favorite rapper pushes the tool's levels to it's limits that we get Rosie the Robot. The Vocoder, probably for as long as we can remember, has been used as a special effect. So when someone like Q-Tip says he prefers one over the other, don't get all ignorant. And please, please stop trying to validate T-Pain with Roger Troutman when he really owes his debt to Cher. [H/T Miss Info, since otherwise we wouldn't be posting SOHH-branded content.]

the vocoder has been around for a really, really long time. just because Cher had a massive mainstream No. 1 hit with it, doesn't mean she was a pioneer by any means. it really got a lot of burn back in the early 70's with Peter Frampton, Kraftwerk and other artists.

you know what ive been telling people for about 9 yrs now that CHER started the whole vocoder/autotune thing...LMAO!!

I love Q-Tip!!!! I will have his album by Sunday.
