Mariah Channels Her Inner Thespian in 'Tennessee' Role, New Video

I know that I give Mariah Carey a hard time around these parts, but I just expect so much more from her than what she's been delivering us lately. However, after seeing her new music video I might be inclined to cut her a little slack. Keyword: little. The video is for the song "Right to Dream," which won't be found on her latest album E=MC2, but is instead a song from her new film, Tennessee. In the flick, Mariah plays an aspiring country singer who is trapped in an abusive marriage to Lance Reddick (The Wire, Oz), but she escapes to pursue her dream with two brothers passing through her town on a journey of their own. The synopsis may not sound like much, but for everyone who wrote Mariah off as an actress after her debut performance in the stinker that was Glitter, she may change your mind in this role. Keyword: may. This movie has been in the works for a minute, has already hit the film festival circuit and it is finally ripe for a limited theatrical release this month. Dramatic clips from the film are interspersed throughout the video, which made for compelling viewing but relegated the song, which she co-wrote with Willie Nelson and also performs in the film, to background music. Take a gander at the video below, than let us know in the comments if you'll be rushing to the theater to check Mariah out in this flick.
