Babygirl Biopic Is 'Hot Like Fire' According To Film's Director

aaliyah.jpgAfter a long while of being speculated about, the Aaliyah biopic is now actually being made. For real. The point made over at Pop Tracks about this having a lot to do with the success of Notorious so far is a good one. Could this film have been completed without that B.I.G. push? Who knows. What is apparent, though, is that director Bill Condon is very confident about the movie being successful. Indeed he thinks it will be embraced so fully by audiences that it will rival the J.Lo fame-launcher Selena. Having recently directed the Academy Award winning Dreamgirls, he may be just the person to helm the film and may draw larger audiences based on that alone. No real word on whether Keisha Chante is going to do well playing her, but no matter. The fact that this film is being made, and that it isn't omitting (too much at this point) her marriage to R. Kelly entirely, is news enough. [H/T: PT]

First Obama, now Mutada & Stoney in total agreement:-) this is the year of real black men!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Stony 100%.. Although I will say her second album changed the sound and direction of R&B for ever. But that had more to do with Timbaland and Missy, that BabyGirl. And I know I'll catch some flack, but other than Resolution, Rock the Boat and maybe more than a woman. Her last joint was'nt all that. That Romeo Mus die soundtrack was fire though.

I didn't know Bill Condon was directing the move- interesting! Hopefully the movie and Keisha Chante can capture Aaliyah's essence.

I think the Aaliyah biopic will be good; her story is very interesting -- the whole R.Kelly thing, her mysteriousness, and her tragic ending. I don't think audiences know very much about her, so hopefully the biopic will shed more light on the artist we thought we knew.

Was she that big enough of a star to warrant a film? Selena was a uber-star in her native land, she sold at least 10 times as many albums as Aaliyah. I dont think that during her peak Aaliyah was ever the top female R&B artist, thats not a slight of the sisters talent, it's just the facts. There has yet to be one person who knew this young lady to ever have a bad word to say about her, she was beautiful people. Alot of people had no idea she was married to R. Kelly when she was 15, hopefully it stays that way, the more they trump this movie the more dirt they will try to dig up on her. And who wants to see R. Kelly on the red carpet at the premier????? God forbid that happens......

I hope they get an unknown to play Aaliyah. Someone who can step in the role and just wow us. Not some already established artist. Keisha Chante does have the look, but still I'd like to see someone not in the business already.

oooh exciting! I still miss Aaliyah's presence dearly. Had to look up who Keisha Chante is, but she looks pretty dead-on. I pray she can dance as well as Aaliyah did, or that'd be a deal-breaker for me. And to have an award-winning director in the mix shows that the film will hopefully get the respect Aaliyah was due. Rest in Paradise!!
