Battle of the Beats

Who Did This Beat Better? Jesse Boykins III or Coultrain?

Being on hiatus for the holidays afforded me many opportunities to divulge in the plethora of music that my poor iPod has been housing for several months. While Coultrain's album, The Adventures of Seymour Liberty, was one that I had on a steady repeat for much of last year, Jesse Boykins III's latest, The Beauty Created, was one that I got more familiar with recently. Interestingly enough, two songs from both albums feature the same melody. While I have no idea why this is so, it certainly makes for a unique spin on the first Battle of The Beats of 2009. I'll go out on a limb and say that I believe that Coultrain has won this round, but what say you, dear reader? Who did this beat better? Jesse or Coultrain?

Jesse Boykins III: "Trust"

Coultrain: "Playin' Catch Up"

Hmmm...I think I'm gonna go with Coultrain just because as much as I love Jesse's voice, this one just sounds too much like some of his other songs. Coultrain is a little more refreshing. :)

jesse's version (produced by rene del fierro and basil wajdowicz by the way) is much better. they didn't just put an obvious sample alone like the coultrain version but rather they flipped it by layering live instruments and creating something real fresh. both vocalists are dope but i'm trippin off the beat the most

COULTRAIN! STL REPRESENT!!!!! Always have been a fan of Coultrain. He's like Marvin reincarnated, if you believe in that sort of thing...

COULTRAIN!! he is more original and most jesse songs sound pretty derivative to me. this song is good, but sounds like so many others. also and esp his pantyhose song...sounds like what vikter duplaix was doing 5 years ago. like jesse, but love coultrain!

COULTRAIN!! the similarity of these songs lies in the beat, but to me they are so different. coultrain is more original and i dont know, every jesse song sounds pretty derivative. this song is good, but sounds like so many others. also and esp his pantyhose song...sounds like what vikter duplaix was doing 5 years ago. like jesse, but love coultrain!

Both tracks are dope but I'm gonna go with Coultrain on this one. His is the more soulful-grooving of the two (to me).

Jesse Boykins III for sure!

Wow, they're similar all right. Still I gotta vote JESSE JESSE JESSE cuz I'm minorly obsessed with him.
JBIII !!!!!!!!
peace,lily

Diggin the sample period, but I liked Jesse's version more.

I like em both but gotta go with Coultrane on this one.
Love that damn song!!!

I like em both but gotta go with Coultrane on this one.
Love that damn song!!!

JESSE BOYKINS III

Love them both, but I'm really diggin Jesse's voice more.

Jesse did this sample true justice. Gotta love it!

(it's a Herbie Hancock sample http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBr3Q73VhGw)

Definitely Jesse! Gotta love that voice and those lyrics...

love both...definetely next generation..posted it up on moovmnt to..

and it's quite the same cause they used the same sample

Herbie Hancock - trust.....

love that track...

keep up the good work over there

They both sample Herbie Hancock's "Trust Me". There's Youtube footage of Q-Tip, with Consequence acting as the videographer, creating a beat with this SAME sample.
