A Soulful Noise
New Label, New Album For Leela James
Four years after her debut album blew the roof off the sucker, Leela James is returning this Spring with a new album to quench the thirst of those wanting another hit of her gut-bucket soul. Let's Do It Again is scheduled to be released in April, and it will also find Leela on a new label, Shanachie Records, home to fellow sangers Calvin Richardson and Maysa. On this new disc, she'll be be traveling into deep soul territory once again and pay homage to The Staple Singers and Bobby Womack, who are amongst her influences. Hopefully this switch to a smaller label will prove to be a good move
for Ms. James and they'll know what to do with the big-voiced singer
because it's beyond belief why she hasn't blown up yet. [SR]

I thought Leela James was gonna go the way of many other amazing singers and disappear off the face of the earth. I bought her debut not long after its release, and ever since i have been lookin for info on a follow up ... now i have found it.
This year is shaping up to be as good as last year (if PPP, Tortured Soul and India's releases are anythin to go by - a new D'Angelo album and New Amerykah part II would definitely tip the balance).
Soul UK | February 4, 2009 4:56 AM | PermalinkYay! I knew she didn't like her major deal with WB. They did her music no favors by trying to make it mainstream because just like Lalah Hathaway and Yewande' she is one of the greats with a powerful message in her music like the passed soul artists. Shanachie is a great label.
