Jazmine Sullivan Dreams A Little Too 'Big' In This Clip

Like "Lions, Tigers & Bears," Jazmine Sullivan's clip for "Dream Big" is green-screened within an inch of its life. For a girl with this much beauty and natural talent, these over-the-top videos are unnecessary. We certainly don't bemoan the concept itself, which is a direct translation of the song's themes, it's just that the execution is so tragically gauche. Note to director: It doesn't matter how big and colorful your effects are if they look cheesy. Dope song, though.

Comments

This looks like the opening credits to a teen show on Nickolodeon lol I love her to death, but I never liked this song.

I was expecting to hate the video, but I don't. It actually makes me like the song more whihc is interesting b/c the song is one of my least favs on her album. It's "big" just like she says in the song. I like the over-the-top flashiness.

this is a great song, don't get me wrong. it's definitely one of my faves on the album. however, when you have a song that is lyrically so straightforward, you don't need a video that literally reiterates so much of the songs themes. this was my same problem with "Lions, Tigers & Bears." perhaps Dave Meyers or someone else could have made this video as great as it should be . . . make it more abstract, fun, something.

I think this song does a few things correctly.

1. It appeals to the kids dreaming of bigger and better things. Kids who want to follow in her footsteps with their MySpace and Soundclick pages.

2. The European feel of this song makes it universal. Good music is good music. Growing up in the 80's a lot of our dance music had that feel and todays kids are getting used to that kind of sound with Danity Kane's "Damage" being such a big hit as well as songs from Kanye, Kid Cudi, and Beyonce. Music is universal and at least some are smart enough to realize that.

3. The video plays to a younger audience who thinks those HP commericals and the latest round of T-Pain videos are cool thereby hopefully exposing Jazmine's incredible talent to a legion of fans who seem to be overlooking her.

No, I personally think management is taking the right steps with this one.

I actually didn't too much mind this video. It was a CGIsore but it made more sense than the video for "Lions, Tigers & Bears" did. Love this song.

Thus the reason she was snubbed at the Grammys!!!

I dont see the problem. Videos are a transient means of burning an image into ones mind. This one, to me, is less excessive than multiple edits at break neck speeds. Or bland performance on minimalist stage sets ( J-Hud)

And I actually think some of the songs Jazmine has are way more melodic and creative than J-Hud. The videos are following the same pattern.

Can we leave DaftPunk alone now? I'm blanking on which song this is, but I think Kayne's dip in that well is the most sucessful attempt and souling up DP, and Janet's try (So Much Betta, I think) and Jazzi's just aren't "there". When electronic hiphop works it can be memorable, but this? Ain't.

Also, after finally hearing that Miss Sullivan's live version of "Round Midnight", this new track seems more disposable by comparison.

I think what her record company is attempting to do with this video is make her more relevant to a younger audience after all she isn't even 20 yet! Like it or not her sales have been underwhelming for someone with so much potential. This video and song seems like it will get plenty airplay on 106 & Park/Hot 97 which I believe is the intent.

It's the 80's influence...It's not just in our fashion where we are seeing this influence italso in music videos. The technology has come a long way since than but it's basicallly the same thing.

I think this would've been a easier pill to swallow if "Lions, Tigers, & Bears" hadn't preceded it. I have to agree: I don't care for the direction A&R has taken Jazmine, especially after falling in love with her as an unsigned artist on MySpace. They keep trying to make her trendy when her voice is classic.

I can't see the video since I'm at work, but after LTB, I think I'll pass on rushing to see this one. I think the image portrayed in the Need You Bad and Bust Your Windows videos captured her perfectly, but if what Dar says is true, to me it's the only logical explanation for the strange direction the last two videos have gone in. And LMAO at that last comment. As much as I adore Jazzy, the wardrobe needs a major comeup. But I hope it's in the works, as I can only imagine what she and her people learned with this first album and what needs to change come sophomore effort.

it occurred to me that this video was not intended for US-meaning the United States. i think this is supposed to be for Europe primarily. that being said, maybe they were going for a different approach? however, that doesn't mean you have to be this corny. i mean, what, did Syndrome offer a 2-for-1 special (Syndrome directed LTB as well . . .)? video cliches (like rain, motorcycles/car accidents, and having song lyrics all over your video) are wack 99% of the time. seeing the lyrics plastered all over just make it seem like glorified karaoke or something. it's corny!

i really don't like the direction they are taking with Jazmine. i loved the video for "Need U Bad," but these last two clips seem to have misrepresented Jazzy, i feel. any degree of seriousness has been lost. the last two videos are totally Miley Cyrus territory. suppose they make a video for "In Love with Another Man"? i mean, that's some grown folks stuff-what the hell is THAT going to look like?

oh, and she needs a new stylist. *dead*

Kinda reminds me of the videos you make at the mall.

I think the video succeeds at making her appear to be a young artist.. in contrast to her voice for once. I think this is the one song I can't really deal with from that album but now I can def see it featured in an ad for some slick, compact, hybrib car commercial ha!
