Can Teena Marie 'Last A Day' With This Track?
When I first heard Teena Marie had a duet with Faith Evans, there weren't enough positive expletives in the world to explain how I felt. Laying my ears upon the first eight bars of Teena Marie's screeching vocals on her new single "Can't Last A Day," however, left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Faith Evans and her soft crooning saved this track for me and in fact seemed much better suited for her style of singing. Before the stans' claws come out, just understand that I love Teena Marie as much as you do, but this was a song better suited for a Syleena Johnson-type of singer. Luckily, Teena's run at the end proved to me that Teena still sounds amazing, just not on this track. Hopefully, Teena's new album Congo Square will have tracks that are better suited for her style when it drops June 9th.

Teena screeching? You are out of your mind. This is classic Teena and this song is Grammy worthy incredible. I've been listening to her for 30 years and she still sounds great. After being around for so long why not give the younger generation a chance to sing with her. I'm sure Faith was nothing but honored.
Chill | July 20, 2009 11:18 AM | PermalinkMy comments are strickly positive, sorry. There is nothning but beauty in this song, Can't last a day! The duet between Faith and Teena is beautiful, unique, sexy, there is onlyl harmony on this single. I love it so much! It is magic between their two voices. Teena is Teena and that will never change, she is one of a kind all by herself, no one can touch her and Faith is one of a kind, that's why this song is so hot, this song says exactly what some women feel and it gives me a personal feeling inside. This song is hot and can't be touched.
I'm keeping it real and giving credit where credit is due.

Gckcspvz | July 1, 2009 3:00 AM | PermalinkTeena is my girl and she definitely still has vocals. I think the problem here is that people need to really stand back and let Teena pick her own tracks. If you notice, other than the songs that R James suggested (because they just obviously vibed) Teena only sounded tremendous when you let her...just do her. Don't ask her to rap or have rappers on her track and for heaven sakes of course she's going to sound like she's overdoing it when put next to Faith!!! Not to take anything away from Faith because she can sing but her vocals are from Hip Hop/R&B while Teena is Soul/R&B (more expressive). So of course it's going to be a bit out akward. Takes nothing away from either one of them. It's just the material.
Jaine Blaize | May 26, 2009 9:39 PM | PermalinkFunny you mentioned Syleena Johnson in regard to this song because initially I thought Faith Evans was here. I love the song and think the duet is wonderful. The highs and lows of their respective voices actually works for the song in my opinion.
Whatever the opinion, Teena is STILL the girl and her singing is the truth.
BluJewel | April 13, 2009 4:24 PM | Permalinki love sing bad sing is
jamiehope | April 12, 2009 10:21 PM | PermalinkI could not disagree with you more.
Ken Hamilton | April 11, 2009 4:07 PM | PermalinkBoth Teena and Faith brought a richness and a difference dynamically that was complementary in my mind to this song. You must agree that the first eight bars are not the same old cliche. Teena's opening is power filled and grabbed me and held me throughout the whole song.
I have listened to Teena throughout my life and she never has been better in my mind than now.
Teena sound great. I love the song from the begininng to the end.
Cherry | April 11, 2009 3:57 PM | PermalinkSorry but Syleen Johnson can't hang with Teena. GO TEENA
This track bumps! Its been my dream duet for years! Ask LoLo! :)
CANDYMAN:. | April 10, 2009 7:52 AM | PermalinkCONGO SQUARE will be another beautiful edition to Lady Tee's albums. 365
What can I say but Lady Tee will do her thing however she's able to put out her joints to peeps who await for her. I love her in anything she does and love to explore her ranges and flav's when she sings, collaborates or backgrounds to. Faith is still ever so magestic and magic on the tracks. Im willing to give this joint is credit... "as is" Go on ahead gurls... keep this joint fierce.
Betito | April 9, 2009 5:16 PM | PermalinkThis is Teena doing what Teena does, she puts herself out there. There is nothing wrong with the track. Listen to some Linda Jones and come back at it again
oleskool3 | April 9, 2009 9:27 AM | PermalinkI like it can't wait on the album.
TDUB | April 8, 2009 8:41 PM | PermalinkI like Teena Marie and have been waiting to hear something from her new album. I do not like this track. On top of that it seemed more like a desperate marketing ploy to add Faith (which does not work and who does not stand out at all in the track). I was hoping for something more a la Charlie Wilson who seems to be the only person who can pull something like that off and still have a great sounding record. I love Charlie Wilson's new album. It would be a treat to have them on a record together.
Sharise | April 8, 2009 11:01 AM | PermalinkTEENA MARIE IS AWESOME! Nobody can touch her voice! 30 years in the business and still sounding this good and relivent in todays music industry! Teena needs to get the reconition she deserves! a star on the walk of fame, grammy, Inducted in the rock and funk hall of fame. crowned the Ivory queen of Soul! tear it up Teena tear it up!
David Martin | April 7, 2009 7:15 PM | PermalinkI thought the song was great, but it's funny that Syleen Johnson was mentioned. I acually thought Faith was Syleen Johnson. Nice call. I agree Syleena would have blown this song out the water.
Rashda Washington | April 7, 2009 1:46 PM | PermalinkI haven't heard one screech or scream come from Teena on any of her songs for the past 30 years that I have been listening to her music, whether it is on a record or cd or at a live concert. That is not her style of singing. She can certainly hit them high notes and she can bring it down with ease, not forced ever. I listen to her new song Can't Last A Day every day and I love it. Her voice is still beautiful. Faith sounds great also. And I think the song is suited for both of them singing it together or for Teena to sing it alone which she'll probably have to do a lot when she's singing it live in a concert. I don't know who Syleena Johnson is, never heard of her, but if she is the real screamer or screecher, I don't want to know her.
Felicia | April 6, 2009 2:02 AM | PermalinkI have been so craving this ole skool r & b sound!!! This is what is missing from music today... that genuine, true and authentic R & B sound. None of the "divas" are singing like this these days.
Chike Evans | April 5, 2009 8:50 PM | PermalinkTeena's voice is so classic. I guess you can say the same for Faith for that matter. They both command your ears to listen.
i enjoy listening to both artist. i think this track was more suited for faith to sing rather teena. it sounded a little rough in the beginning but after hearing the whole song it was alright.
danielle | April 5, 2009 6:51 AM | PermalinkYeah I'm reminded of what a good friend said bout Teena Marie's singing....Everything kinda has an exclamation point. hahaha. I still love the old school Teena and respect her talent. Faith as always is the bomb! That's my girl!
Deez | April 5, 2009 4:27 AM | PermalinkI strongly disagree I love this cut it's classic Teena . She is one the few performer who still has her voice.
Donnita | April 4, 2009 7:48 PM | Permalinkit was a little rough in the beginning but Teena is still holding her own! After all these years she still sounds like Teena. Dont dwell on a couple of bad bars and call an amazing singer out like it defines her talents. If you're an Artist, or a true music head, you know that not EVERY note, riff, tone, etc is going to be perfect. Even recorded. Do your thing Teena. We love you AND the song!
david | April 4, 2009 7:08 PM | PermalinkGreat track, good lyrics. If this song was sung in a lower key (Key of F would have been an excellent key), Lady Tee's vocals wouldn't be so over the top.
JLee | April 4, 2009 3:45 PM | PermalinkYeah, I love Teena Marie too, but you're right she's over singing & not suited for the track
Rawle | April 4, 2009 2:23 PM | PermalinkFor some reason I have a sudden craving for milk.
Perry | April 4, 2009 1:20 PM | Permalinki agree 100%...i am a huge teena stan, but she was trippin' in the beginning...but after that, she calmed down and rode the track quite nicely.
marcus | April 4, 2009 1:12 AM | PermalinkI like the song from the jump...yes, I can hear Syleena Johnson rocking this song but Teena put some intensity/urgency in the vocals and I like it. I love the old school flavor of the song too. Also, it's good to see Faith Evans back on the scene. Teena is releasing "Congo Square" on Stax Records; I hope they sign Faith Evans too.
Dre | April 3, 2009 8:30 PM | PermalinkI like both Teena and Faith, but this track didn't do a damn thing for me. Sounds like somebody just decided to put them together at the last minute, kinda like Justin Timberlake and Al Green at the Grammys.
Soulrific | April 3, 2009 6:15 PM | PermalinkI like this track. I have to agree it's a nice contrast to both artists voices... this sounds like typical Teena hitting the uber soprano notes and then taking it to a lower octave.... I would bump it.
hmm | April 3, 2009 4:54 PM | Permalinksounds like Teena was too anxious on this track. she's definitely still got the voice--she was just a bit overly aggressive here, and the track didn't really require all of that. Faith saved this for me, too.
dar | April 3, 2009 4:28 PM | PermalinkI dig this track and the contrast in their voices. Teena can still sing and I'm pleased she's back. The sound of the song is very old school and well suited to both these Soul Singers. I hope they duet again.
