Do You 'Love' Al B. Sure!'s New Single?
I'll be the first to admit that I was a shade cynical when I heard about this new Al B. Sure! project on Hidden Beach. It's not that I had low expectations, I just didn't know what to expect from the man who hasn't had a hit since the first George Bush was in office. However, I am surprisingly smitten by his first single
"I Love It (Papi Aye Aye Aye)." Despite the side-eye inducing subtitle, Al sounds better than he ever has, and the song is a Quiet Storm ready gem. He even teams back up with Kyle West (where's he been?) to break it down once again. Honey I'm Home hits stores on June 23rd and after listening to this track and the album sampler, Al B. Sure! sounds like he's back In Effect Mode.

SHARON KEYES | July 21, 2009 7:54 PM | Permalinkhmmmmmm...i'm still trying to decide...it's kinda weak for a debut single...but good for a internet leak. :) i'll give it a 6 out of 10...
musikhed | June 16, 2009 5:35 PM | Permalinkbut MAN...i loved me some Al. B. Sure in my teens...good to see him back in the studio.
I like the Single... I just don't LOVE the Single... It's very Safe... That being said I sincerely hope that the former recipient of the prestigious SONY INNOVATOR AWARD would come with something with a bit more edge overall with the Project... (NO FALSETTO!!! Are You Kidding Me?!?!?!) You aren't D.M.C. from Run-D.M.C. you don't have to worry about Vocal Chords Shattering... Come On DAWG!!! And Kyle West has been waiting on His Cousin to get it in gear...Glad to see that He has. And The KYLE WEST Mystery Solved right here... http://www.myspace.com/keywestmusicinc You can see what He looks like and who he's worked with since the Al. B. Sure! Sessions...
DRES Tha BEATnik | June 16, 2009 3:17 PM | PermalinkI've been looking for my Right On posters since I heard this joint. It grabbed me on the first listen. Nice, classic slow jam that I would call up and dedicate to my boo...you know if they still did that sorta thing.
Vivrant Thang | June 3, 2009 10:30 AM | PermalinkI thought it was kinda dope! Who would've thought we'd hear a new track from Al B. Sure! in this millenium? That within itself is pretty cool.
@keyknow: yea! about Kyle West and Al B Sure being the same person! lol. Does anyone really know what Kyle West looks like?!? I sure don't, but maybe that's just me :) That's one of these modern day mysteries I need solved.....
rapnerd | June 2, 2009 10:35 PM | PermalinkI can't front, I had the imperial side-eye when I heard Diddy's Baby's Mama's First Baby's Daddy was making a comeback. But I can honestly say that the track and cool and the vocals were palatable. I think what made Al B stand out in the 90s (e.g., Night and Day, Secret Garden, etc.) was the controlled falsetto - which he ditches on this song, resulting in non-dynamic vocal ability. He doesn't sound bad, but he doesn't transport you to another place with his performance. Kyle West has stepped the game up ;) I give the overall joint a solid B-
Fave | June 2, 2009 9:54 AM | PermalinkIt certainly isn't bad. I'm more than willin' to give the Unibrow a chance with this new ish.
Kayode Kendall | June 2, 2009 9:28 AM | PermalinkSurprisingly I really like this song too. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I did. I will definitely have to check it out.
Wanda | June 1, 2009 8:24 PM | PermalinkI think Kyle West & Al B Sure are the same person. Why haven't we heard from Mr West until Al B comes back out. You mean to tell me he ain't tried to break it down with no one else. No Ne-yo, No Beyonce, No gotdam body...Sounds kinda fishy to me, but i do like this new song.
keyknow | June 1, 2009 8:23 PM | PermalinkWow. I don't remember the last time I've heard a smooth R&B key change. Furthermore, the lyrics wasn't musical porn. I never thought I would hear a slow jam in this decade. And yes, my heart skipped a beat when I saw Kyle West name on the post :-)
I may just take a chance and pre-order this one on iTunes....

Meeky | June 1, 2009 6:04 PM | PermalinkSomething about the chorus reminds me of an MJ song...it'll come to me. Kudos on the voice lessons, Al B!
The LoveHater | June 1, 2009 5:14 PM | PermalinkI am not pleased. Sorry to be the lone naysayer, but I'm not quite sure why Al B needed to come back out. And the song that displays his falsetto that I'm listening to currently, "Dedicate My All To You," is classic Al B where he sounds the best. But I'm still not moved enough to want to own this.
I also have to say that his remake of "Lady In My Life"--yes, THAT one--is oy-inducing and blasphemous.
So endeth my rant.
ill Mami | June 1, 2009 5:02 PM | PermalinkWow. I've always been a fan, but this changes everything. No more falsetto?! Quite grown (despite the side-eye inducing title) and I'm really surprised he's still working with producer Kyle West after all these years. I may have to cop this one on release day.
cjayconrod | June 1, 2009 4:13 PM | PermalinkAdd me to the pleasantly surprised list.
chynadoll | June 1, 2009 3:37 PM | PermalinkI'm pleasantly surprised about how good this song is.
