Mary J. Blige's Protege LaNeah Leaves Us With More Questions Than Answers
I will admit that I'm on Twitter more than a little bit. It's my CNN of sorts. Now that we have that confession out of the way, I was more than intrigued when I saw Mary J. Blige's tweet about a new artist signed to her Matriarch label named LaNeah (for those interested, she cowrote "Love Lockdown". Moving on). Looking at the video for her new song "Screamin' My Name," however, left me with more questions than answers. Peep the video, then peep my theories about this whole situation after the bounce.
- Pardon my saying so, but this song kind of sounds like those commercials that come on Urban radio that advertise for local Hip Hop-minded clothing stores.
- This song fits the East Coast phenomenon of the obligatory Summer jam by an unknown hot young thang, does it not? Hey, it worked for Amerie, so maybe it'll work for her.
- Did she really just sing "Now I'm the 'it girl', I'm that bitch"?
- Why was this old ass Jay-Z beat used? And if so, isn't this something someone could have produced and mastered using a laptop and ProTools in a bathroom?
- What is the deal with the producer's hair in this clip? My man, you are killing that perm, but you are not Jermaine Stewart, and I don't want no cherry wine. Uh-huh.

if you took the talent of Rihanna & Cassie..and left a little of Rihanna's style out..you're left with her.
[fung'ke][blak][chik] | January 4, 2010 7:06 PM | PermalinkThe only thing that kept this from being the biggest waste of 3:18 was my drooling adoration over Mary's fit and boots.
Mary, I'll love you for life for the aforementioned reasons. But you're skating on thin ice. Thinner than this chick's voice.
Vivrant Thang | July 20, 2009 4:58 PM | PermalinkYeh - i was wondering about this - the beat sounds like that game song with 50 - MVP - sorta - and the chick needs to bring something new to the table. they look like they aare having fun tho but Mary J lost her swagger after the breakthrough. i thought she came back for a minute but her taste is not sweet mary no more if that makes sense - but im not a HATER - no!! anything is possible, she might bring some heat on an album - anythings possilbe, remember brownstone??? Michael Jackson brought them to light :)

But maybe it will proove a point. Men have been bankrolling pretty lightskin-ded girls for decades in the industry. Maybe it's a feminist equal opportunity declaration.
Or maybe girl has a "helluva" story on the personal side. We'll see. But really think that this MUST be a throwaway track.
hoodedmonk | July 18, 2009 7:55 AM | PermalinkHer primary feat was escaping Lowell, Massachusetts: the first city on the list of 'in-land Alcatrazes.' Everyone can't back up Father MC!!!
Moe | July 17, 2009 8:30 PM | Permalinki think they could've done waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than that
eboogieb | July 17, 2009 6:21 PM | Permalinkand this def shouldn't be a debut track.
Screamin your name? And you are WHO again?
Owww, its the black Denise Richards and Katt Williams as her sound engineer. Beats good, vocals are abit too pop to match the beat. Agree with the Cassie with 'talent'.
Jay Walia | July 17, 2009 5:22 PM | Permalink1st: Why didn't I know MJB was on Twitter?
2nd: Who exactly is screaming this girl's name?
The song is just...eh. Nothing more, nothing less. *shrugs*
Bree | July 17, 2009 4:32 PM | Permalinklol oops...it said it wasnt error posting hence the 3 posts ..
Ayah | July 17, 2009 4:28 PM | PermalinkThe lyrics are pre-emptively defensive, as if she already knows we'll think it's garbage. Hmm.
nOvaMatic | July 17, 2009 3:25 PM | PermalinkThe song is not that bad! MJB didn't look like much either when she first came out (c'mon y'all know a sistah was busted...)! But she grew and so will LaNeah.
HYA | July 17, 2009 3:11 PM | PermalinkI'm not moved. That's all I can say about thic chick. She doesn't really seem like a star to me, but then again, when Rihanna started out I could've sworn she was going to be a one hit wonder. We'll see in due time.
Nate | July 17, 2009 2:47 PM | PermalinkLMMFAO @ Jermaine Stewart hair!
LeNeah = Cassie....but with actual talent
Soulrific | July 17, 2009 2:27 PM | PermalinkShe sounds like Cassie
sweet | July 17, 2009 2:26 PM | PermalinkLyrically its garbage. Very disposable and yes why was this beat chosen?
