When Making A Video Goes Wrong: Alicia Keys’ ‘Doesn’t Mean Anything’

Alicia Keys' new video for "Doesn't Mean Anything" premiered this morning on Perez Hilton's gag-worthy website, and it should have been renamed "Doesn't Make Any Sense." It started off with promise, as Alicia looked out over the cold, hard city while lamenting about a lost love but went downhill on rollerskates shortly after the music started. I'm admittedly not a huge fan of the song, but this video surely didn't make me like it anymore as videos sometimes do. Keys is lucky she's nice to look at because there's not much else to see here. Random objects disappearing into plumes of smoke? Nonsensical. The CGI desert? Wack. The rock climbing in stiletto booties? Ridiculous. The hip and thigh action in those leggings? Banging. My verdict: Skip it and keep it moving. Which is precisely what Alicia should have done when the director presented this foolishness to her.

You know, I am a HUGE AK fan but I do dislike this song AND video. Like you said, it started out promising BUT it took a very unfortunate visual detour. And I was wondering if the video would have made me enjoy the song a little bit better...err..uhh...nah. You expect a little bit more from someone of her caliber.

Tying this to the post on Michael Jackson, I'm trying to think of the one MJ video that left me disappointed. The only one I can think of is "Not Alone"...and it really didn't disappoint as much as I could have done w/o seeing MJ with his shirt open. No offense.

word... she killt it with the mountain climbing in a gold clubbing tank and high heels. WTF? lol. I think they got too "poetic" with it.

The song and video both blow chunks. Recycled version of "No One", and I didn't like that song either.

*YAWN* That was a Lunesta sleeping pill of a video. I love me some AK, and even though I'm in the minority that actually likes the song (it's the less abrasive cousin to "No One" IMO), this is just a boring and thrown together mess.
But have we really seen any engaging videos at all this year? I'm talking about a video that didn't feature a club, someone on a balcony singing out to the city, someone sitting and reflecting while singing etc. I'm drawing a blank.

IMO the video wasn't that bad, but LMBO@ Soulrific on the song blowing chunks...to me I like it even less than No One, because this song is way more of a snooze...plus why is she even on this topic again? If I Ain't Got You was awesome and truthfully the Alicia I miss nowadays..

Hearing her describe this as a great song, is baffling to my mind. I am both perturbed and disappointed by her efforts of late. While I appreciate her relatively-genuine philanthropy. I do not relate to her music like I do to Amy Winehouse and even a little Duffy. White women are taking over soul. And AK sounds more country/easy listening every day.
She might have had roots in poetry writing, but if she is no longer able to write a soulful, poignant song, we ask that she kindly drop the pen and hire a writer that can evoke something more fitting of her voice.
The best leverage she has is her image as you poitned out, because she is mixed race, I can see why she has the appeal and will sell albums. BUT this is not why we loved her, not at all. Her first fans will see past this to the half-hearted songs, mediocre mellow crooning and demand she drop the facade, kick off the stiletto's and get back to something real.
Maybe it's just me.. Like I said on Twitter, last 2-3 albums of AK have been a pass for me. I wont be picking this up either. So while I champion her efforts in Africa, her fairly clean-living and pretty-b-girl swagger I just can't co-sign this shit.

A complete and utter waste of time and visuals.

Let me just get this out of my system: Dayum @ the hips and thigh shots! I have ALWAYS lusted after those knockouts! Ok, now that I'm done with that; the song does suck and the rock climbing was ridiculous, but I can see the symbolism in everything disappearing. I miss the Alicia in cornrows that sang from the heart, wears THAT Akeys, huh? Oh yeah, mainstream destroyed her and flat ironed her hair. Gave her a platinum plated piano and pink glitter club tops. Meh.

  • Grainy

The video is clearly a vanity project (cankles and all).
With that said, I stopped listening to her music after her first album (which was the bomb)...except for "You Don't Know My Name", which was a good song.
Her first album was the magic formula. All of this pop ish she's doing now just doesn't make me want to buy her album, at all.

  • Nonplussed

Now if she'd been wearing cowboy boots and a Stetson in Monument Valley after being thrown by her horse and menaced by a rattle-snake, that would have all made sense; she makes a very good country artist,
and God knows, country needs her (the bland leading the bland?)
But You Don't Know My Name was a work bordering on genius.

I have never been an AK fan with "You don't know my name" being the only song I have ever liked from her. She is definitely way far into pop now. She could open up for U2 at this point. Don't like the song and the video is so ridiculous it is laughable.

    Okaaaayyy...
Why is Alicia climbing a mountain without saftey ropes or any gear (??) Also, why would you climb to the top of the mountain to sing about a love that you don't have??
Being at the top of a mountain is typically associated with (1)triumph, (2) accomplishment and/or (3) resolution. Why create that metaphor to sing about a love that you don't have realizing that's precisely the thing you can't buy or achieve (??)
...while it might be boring or out of character for Alicia Keys' fans, this video is above all, confusing.

  • Mikaliah

I agree w/ what you said about just skipping the video, But it made perfect since to me. she had it all, nice house nice things but w/ out thin it means nothing at all.(dissapears w/ smoke) well atleast thats what i got out of it.

  • adiqtiv

she's a freemason now so her videos are filled with a bunch of freemason symbols and metaphores. Kinda like Jay z's run this town and his latest video, "on to the next one" ...indeed, they make no sense, but only to us, who are unfamiliar with their beliefs.
