Dasha Tackles 'Umi Says'

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Like most of you, I love Mos Def and "Umi Says" is just one of those tracks that I don't want to hear anyone else perform but him. I'm not going to say that Dasha doesn't sound great because she does. But there's something missing. The song ends abruptly, and while that's not her fault, I felt even more lost when the song was over than before I pressed play. Plus, is it just me or is there something a tad bit subversively sexy about her version? Again, this may not be her fault. Some people exude sex no matter what they're doing, but not on a song about your Mom. I really may just be straight bugging. Take a listen and judge for yourself. [H/T: KN]

Dasha: "Umi Says"

Comments

The music production is good and her vocal quality is good as well. However, I don't think she was coached well on HOW she should do her delivery. Some classics should be left alone, unless you are going to make it as good as the original, or make it better.

Mos Def's delivery was fitting to the lyrics. I think she should study singers like Billy Holiday, Nina Simone, N'Dambi, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu. A sexy feel should be done for sensual songs. Not a song that's talking about upliftment and/or dealing with life's struggles.

By far....she can't touch Mos Def's version.

I'm loving it...she didn't change a whole lot but she still made it her own. It doesn't top the original of course but still sounds great....
