A Soulful Noise

Break Up To Make Up: Groove Theory Reunites

Last week news floated around the web that the '90s duo Groove Theory are getting back together. We got  a bit preoccupied with the blizzard of life in DC to report on it here at SBHQ, but now that there is time to share, not sure this news as newsworthy for us as it is for Bryce Wilson, the male member of the group that contains the effervescent Amel Larrieux.

Now, I'm not saying that Bryce would be the sole beneficiary of an image boost from the group's reunion, but if one were to do a chart comparison of what has jumped off for both members since the group's break up, we would say hands-down that Amel is probably the most noted for her creative outputs since their split. Her slew of solo releases since the duo's parting have not only been monetarily successful, but Amel is often given the label of being one of the first artists to kick off the then-new category of music in the '90s we nostalgically refer to as Neo-Soul.

But, we can't let face value fool us. While Amel is most known now and pretty much was the most memorable face of Groove Theory when they first came onto the scene, Bryce has been making such strong moves behind-the-scenes that we can forgive him for his participation as an actor in the God-awful movie Beauty Shop. Producing for the likes of Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton and working with such well-known songwriters as Babyface, Wilson's production sales have exceeded 50 million since his exit from Groove Theory, and he's gone on to win two GRAMMY Awards.

So, this repairing should be something worth watching. When two people reconnect after having remarkable success as individuals, the creativity sparks that ensue are bound to be hotter than ever. Let's hope that Groove Theory brings the fiyah in the 2010.

I for one am glad that they have reunited. I have probably every Amel song ever done but the production with Laru was a bit flat at times (no shots). I lost an Amel track though, the one where she does a hook on an old Group Home track.. anyone with a link? Would be greatly appreciated

I'll certainly check out what they put out. Though honestly I haven't been longing for a reunion or anything, as Amel has been putting out consistently good music. From their first album though, I do still greatly enjoy Didja Know and of course Tell Me.

Yeah "stoneyisland," you're missing a whole lot of things. Yes, as a group, Groove Theory had one real hit single. But you apparently have never heard their debut album, which is without a doubt, a classic. Plus as Moon stated, They have both been succesful doing their own thing. Amel's had hits like "For Real" & "Get Up."

@stoneyisland I think you missed a lot of good things then.

Am I missing something here? but this "group" had one hit, they are by definition the epitome of the phrase "one hit wonder"................

That Groove Theory CD was one of the most slept on Hip Hop Soul CD's of all time! Bryce is a great producer and Amel is a great singer. It's great to have them back!

I prefer Amel on her own...but I'm sure they will make good music...

I'm so excited!! Can't wait for the first single.

Woo hoo, that's some good news!

This freunion would definitely be a good thing. I can only imagine what would be produced by them considering the amount growth both seemed to have done independently.
