John Legend Gets A Chance To 'Shine' On Leno
In yet another performance in support of his well-received collaborative album with The Roots, Wake Up!, John Legend stopped by The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to perform the only original song from the set, "Shine." The album features reinterpretations of '60s and '70s soul classics by Legend and the most dynamic band on the scene today. While the rest of the project is evocative, powerful and engaging, "Shine" is his latest entry in the book, Yet Another Attempt At Broadening My Audience With Worldly Ballads, co-written by Alicia Keys. The stripped-down tune is also featured in the new documentary, Waiting For Superman. The desired acoustic effect is not lost on viewers. Legend's trademark throaty vocals and falsetto combine here for a fairly solid showing. Sadly, The Roots couldn't be in two places at once, as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is filmed across the country in New York. Nonetheless, Leno apparently loved the performance and I suspect you will, too, after you check the video below.
