16 Janet Jackson Barbie Dolls That We’d Like To See

When the SoulBounce team got the news that a Janet Jackson Barbie doll had been created, squeals of delight could be heard across the country. That is until we learned that there was only one of its kind manufactured and that the doll is currently being auctioned off to the highest bidder to benefit the charity Project Angel Food. With the bid already topping $1000 and with broken hearts, we all kissed our dreams of owning the "Divinely Janet" doll goodbye. Which ultimately was fine, because although the Divinely Janet doll is an absolutely gorgeous replica of Janet when she performed on American Idol earlier this year, it's not exactly one that we would have chosen being the group of Janet fans that we are. A style and fashion trendsetter, Janet has so many iconic looks throughout her career that could translate well into a miniature plastic version of the diva.
With that said, we came up with our own ideas for Janet Jackson Barbie dolls that we'd like to see made and would most definitely buy if ever given the chance. Mattel, are you listening?
Center

Janet "Control" Barbie
So many layers, so much hairspray. "Control" Barbie is like the later versions of Skipper that are almost Barbie without quite being Barbie, I think. She's cute in the face and a little thick in the waist. The bouffant alone is worthy of permanent commemoration. -- Ro

Janet "Pleasure Principle" Barbie
Long before Willow Smith whipped her hair back and forth, Janet Jackson, armed with a couple of chairs, a pair of second-skin jeans and one fabulous haircut, put her neck into it. The "Pleasure Principle" Barbie rocks the same iconic cut, tied black t-shirt, black jeans, knee pads and black and white Adidas. Leaving no detail out, the package also includes a chair, denim jacket and Adidas wristband. Her ultra-pliable limbs make it easy for "Pleasure Principle" Barbie to replicate many of the moves from the music video. Just press play and get ready break a sweat. No "Pleasure Principle" experience would be complete without the commemorative "Pleasure Principle" Barbie Dream Glam Warehouse. Recreate the video in your own room! Dream Glam Warehouse and additional chairs sold separately. -- Ivory

Janet "Rhythm Nation" Barbie
With a fearless red-lipped pout and long black ponytail, Janet "Rhythm Nation" Barbie sports an iconic look. She comes dressed in a black baseball hat with a metal "1814" applique, a black military-style shirt jacket with silver buckles and faux leather straps and collar, black belted pants and chunky, strappy boots. Special details, including Janet's signature key earring and silver "1814" pins, ensure that "Rhythm Nation" Barbie is as striking, timeless and instantly recognizable as the video she's inspired from. (Bonus: Remove the black hat and release her ponytail and she becomes Janet "Black Cat" Barbie!) -- huny

Janet "Alright" Barbie
Donning a pin-striped zoot suit and tie with her long black hair covered with a floppy matching hat is "Alright" Barbie. Still fun and cute, "Alright" Barbie offers tons of fun accessories, including the detachable gold chain watch that adds charm to the classic look. Despite the masculine-dressed exterior, though, "Alright" Barbie comes with lacy undergarments in the event of costume malfunction or lest it be forgotten that behind every strong woman is a man she can seduce in a heartbeat. "Alright" Barbie fully dressed is still keeping imaginations in check, but what lies beneath will surely blow the mind. (See: "Any Time, Any Place" Barbie.) Heavy D companion doll in different sizes sold seperately. -- Moon

Janet "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" Barbie
"Love Will Never Do (Without You)" Barbie showcases Janet as a young yet mature woman. Gone are the body-slimming and strategically layered pieces of black clothing. In their place are a bosom-bearing bustier and de rigueur tight denim jeans to show off her newer, slimmer, hardened body. "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" Barbie wouldn't be complete without the rather flattering blonde updo wig, gold hoop earrings and a black headband. Antonio Sabato, Jr. and Djimon Hounsou Ken dolls sold separately. -- ill Mami

Janet "If" Barbie
Inspired by one of Janet's sexiest videos ever, Janet "If" Barbie is that doll you don't want to leave your male dolls around. With a mass of wavy light brown hair with blonde highlights on her head, "If" Barbie rocks a fancy yet funky choker, midriff-baring, boob-defining sleeveless vest and tight black pants. "If" Barbie comes complete with swiveling hips and bendable arms that can manhandle other dolls, cup her breasts or shield her naughty bits as needed. -- Butta

Janet "Any Time, Any Place" Barbie
Although the look was only briefly seen in the video, it's forever memorable: "Any Time, Any Place" Barbie comes packaged wearing a short-sleeved, emerald green maxi dress with exposed red seams layered over a sheer, black long-sleeved shirt. Her voluminous brown hair is tousled in loose waves and her face wears a delicate, mischievous smile and minimal makeup. This doll also comes packaged with two alternate outfits: strategically ripped boyfriend jeans with a cropped sweater and a delicate floral dress. However, some collectors may simply prefer to display "Any Time, Any Place" Barbie in her lacy black undergarments, awaiting her neighbor paramour, for maximum effect. -- huny

Janet "Poetic Justice" Barbie
"Poetic Justice" Barbie has all of the Black girl angst and brooding exterior of Justice, Janet's character in the film Poetic Justice. Keeping it simple, her wardrobe consists of all-black everything, baggy jeans, silver hoop earrings and an applejack hat that she wears atop long box braids. The Deluxe Edition "Poetic Justice" Barbie recites poetry if you push a button on her back and comes complete with a Tupac "Lucky" Ken doll and U.S. mail truck for them to roll around South Central L.A. and go on long road trips in.
-- Butta

Janet "You Want This" Barbie
Post-Poetic Justice, the world collectively took notice of a harder yet sweeter side of Janet. "You Want This" Barbie features Janet in microbraids, sterling silver jewelry, a cutoff boybeater, khaki pants and a hint of underwear peeking above her waistband. Continuing her reign as possessing one of the hardest bodies in pop music, six-pack abs are prominently displayed on this model. Desert boots complete the look. Skipper dance crew dolls and the MC Lyte Barbie sold separately. -- ill Mami

Janet "Scream" Barbie
Putting to rest claims that she and Michael are the same person, the Janet "Scream" Barbie comes packaged in her own sleep chamber wearing latex tights, metallic gold bra and overcoat. "Scream" Barbie features a short, choppy haircut, raccoon eyes and loads of kid sister sass for hours of futuristic fun. Remove the overcoat to reveal kneepads to recreate the video's iconic dance break. The Special Edition version of the "Scream" Barbie includes a space station and speaks fluent Jacksonese. -- ChrisAlexander

Janet "Velvet Rope" Barbie
"Velvet Rope" Barbie is essentially about three things: curly red hair, body piercings and latex/menswear fashions. Her brooding exterior only thinly veils both her tattoos and her pathos. "Velvet Rope" Barbie will bring tears to the eyes of your inner child. -- Ro

Janet "Got 'Til It's Gone" Barbie
Possibly sensing that Erykah Badu had stirred up the need for more pan-Africanism in our music and fashion, she teamed up with Mark Romanak for the video for "Got 'Til It's Gone," a great study of the fashion and sensibilities of 1960s pre-apartheid South Africa heavily influenced by Drum, a prominent magazine of the era. This Barbie model features a vintage wide-lapeled brown leather jacket, men's tailored trousers, a printed halter top and individually-sectioned pigtails that bring to mind "the higher the hair, the closer to God." A vision in sepia, the Q-Tip Ken doll is sold separately. -- ill Mami

Janet "I Get Lonely" Barbie
Continuing in the vein of two before her, the Janet "I Get Lonely" Barbie has a head of full, vibrant red hair and is easily the most stunning of them all. Armed with a collection of perfectly fitting pant suits, ample cleavage and undeniable sex appeal, the curvy "I Get Lonely" Barbie embodies the passion, beauty and grace of the Velvet Rope era. Wind machine not included and available by special order only. -- ChrisAlexander

Janet "Call On Me" Barbie
Once again hitting a futuristic note, Janet "Call On Me" Barbie's look is very 3006. With an Afro-Asian style that includes revealing, form-fitting dresses with long, billowing trains, a removable mohawk and a full-back tattoo. This model even comes with a MAC makeup palette and an instruction booklet on how recreate "Call On Me" Barbie's various faces. Nelly and Jermaine Dupri Ken dolls were never manufactured. -- Butta

Janet "Feedback" Barbie
This doll is all about ponytails and catsuits (black and red, of course). You can brush her ponytail with the magic brush and watch it grow before your very eyes! "Feedback" Barbie also whips her hair and hips back and forth and comes with a white ball that we still can't figure out what its purpose is. AAA batteries and remote control included. -- Butta

Janet "2010 Essence Music Festival" Barbie
A little Jem, a little She-Ra, a little dominatrix, Janet's multiple incarnations at the 2010 Essence Music Festival were tailor-made for some pretty excellent subversive/nostalgic playtime. With an abundance of shoes and accessories, funky materials and textures, and some kick-ass short hair, what's not to want? -- Ro

Definitely wouldn't mind having a Rhythm Nation Janet Jackson doll. Would love to see if they could even insert a mechanism to have her fingers do the 5-4-3-2-1 countdown.

This only proves how much of icon Janet has been. Always changing and always beautiful...

  • Nikesha

i'd buy all of them. but since i could only pick one i chose the I Get Lonely Barbie. The Velvet Rope album is perfection and that barbie, song, video highlight it.
However, I would like to see the Damita Jo Barbie. It comes complete with boyfriend ripped jeans. The bodacious smile shown on the back cover of the album booklet, and all of the post superbowl, I'm not talking about Justin Timberlake coyness you can muster. Alternate outfits include the tight white cropped oxford shirt, push my boobs to my chin bra, suspenders, and men's suit pants from the GMA performance as well as the let me recreate Pleasure Principle 2004 style All Nite (Don't Stop) outfit. And if you don't like the clothes underneath it all is that blazing nipple shield everyone remembers never seeing.

Though I was not even born when Janet began her career, MAN, this post took me down (pre)memory lane!!!!!!!! She is really the ish!

  • Ezekiel AKA EaZy

if i could, i would definitely buy ALL of them - except Pleasure Principle (i never got the fascination with that video) and Call On Me (because it reminds me of such a disappointing time in her career)...but since i can only pick one, it would be Got Til It's Gone so i can play with the hair, lol.
or maybe You Want This. that was a hot video.

  • Darrick

I'd buy all of them. Miss Jackson NEEDS a Barbie made in her image. It's only right.

  • http://www.audiodivablog.com Audio Diva

LOVE this article! I'd get 'em all, but if I had to choose, someone will have to fight me for the the "I Get Lonely" and "Rhythm Nation" dolls. I'd also add in 'All For You' Janet, where she had that half jacket thing she was sportin' or "Runaway" Janet with a detachable nose ring...okay, yall got me carried away now!

  • http://soulbounce.com huny

I'm so glad yall like this post. it was fun for us to write it! #janetSTAN
@Ezekiel how old are you, homie? lol. the awesome thing about the pleasure principle video has a lot to do with "being there" when it came out (I was 8 or 9 I believe). she was fresh off that big curly hair and cutie pie chunk look. so when this video debuted, with her ultra straight hair and svelte body, it was a big deal. and it was only her in the video, too, just janet in a warehouse dancing (like michael and her brothers) in front of some mirrors. it was awesome and still is :D

  • Me

Ha ha the accessories and Ken dolls are a riot. Funny.

  • langston

I don't know how I could have possibly missed this post! I was scrolling backwards looking for another one and I "found" this today. I love this freekin article! I would buy all of these dolls for the young at heart women in my life, based upon what era of Janet really spoke to them the most. Bravo SB team & shout-out to all of the other educated, intelligent, and accomplished Janet stans for life! Peace huny! :-)
