Nneka’s ‘Soul Is Heavy’

It's been a while since we last heard from Nigerian-German rapper/singer Nneka, but that is all set to change as she prepares the release of her new album, Soul Is Heavy. This will be Nneka's third album (2010's Concrete Jungle was more a compilation of material from '05's Victim Of Truth and '08's No Longer At Ease) and if the promo video is anything to go by we can expect more of Nneka's unique blend of politically charged hip hop, soul, reggae, and afrobeat. I'm not sure if the song is a track from the LP or simply a promotional tool, but the visuals certainly grab your attention as Nneka sings/raps about her native Nigeria and name checks some of its important socio-political figures including Jaja of Opobo and Isaac Boro. Nowadays it seems that music with a meaning is a rarity, and even then it often only serves as a token gesture, so it's great to see an artist who sings about politics and social issues with the same aplomb as matters of the heart. You actually make it seem really easy along with your presentation but I to find this matter to be really something which I think I might by no means understand. It sort of feels too complicated and very vast for me. I am taking a look forward on your subsequent put up, I will try to get the hang of it!
