Sit Back And Enjoy THEESatisfaction's 'naturalE' Flow

With a little over a week left before their first official release drops on the Sub Pop Records imprint, the ladies of THEESatisfaction seem to be popping up everywhere. Thanks to modern technology, over the weekend I was able to catch their short SXSW set as it streamed live on the internet from the comfort of my living room couch. To say I was excited about what I heard would be an understatement. I was instantly mesmerized by the harmonies of Seattle-based members Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White, so much so that it made their March 27th release date seem way too far away. I wanted more and I wanted it now.

My prayers would be answered less than 48 hours later when NPR posted a stream of the full album, awE naturalE. Getting the chance to listen closer, the duo's talent is evident from start to finish of the WAY too short album (it clocks in at less 30 minutes). Their fragmented, thumping self-crafted sound was the first aspect to draw me. Their melodies were the second, with Cat handling most of the singing, a voice reminiscent of Georgia Anne Muldrow's. Meanwhile, Stasia deftly handles the rhymes, delivering thought-provoking lyrics that run the gambit, ranging from black empowerment to sexuality. And at a time when cookie-cutter lyrics and plastic doll-wannabees decked out in ridiculous attire are all the rage, it's so refreshing to see ladies who let the music speak itself.
